Thoughts and Insights from a True Renaissance Woman
You have an incredibly wide range of Hubs! They include everything from art to cooking to travel to writing to biblical history (and much more). Which subject do you find the most fun to write about?
I think it's fun to write about a whole variety of topics. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a dilettante and if I don't know about something I enjoy researching it to learn more and then have fun sharing that knowledge with others. I guess I thrive on an eclectic diet of subjects.
An overarching theme in many of your Hubs is your Christian scholarship and devotion. In what ways have your religious studies helped you grow as a writer?
Religious studies help me, not only to grow as a writer, but hopefully, also as a person, even if I am growing older. There is always something exciting to learn more about, both in the area of Biblical studies and learning to know more about God and to know Him better, and in that way I can grow as a writer through regular application and practice. This is where HubPages is so helpful as Hubbers encourage each other to improve our writing skills and to share ideas in such a positive way.
You are a mother and grandmother, teacher, world-traveler, cook, artist, prominent figure in your church, writer... basically a superwoman! How do you find time for it all? What does your average day consist of?
Oh, dear! I'm no superwoman! I suppose that having been a teacher and lecturer to a wide range of age groups helps; I seem to have been conditioned (like Pavlov's dogs!) to following a timetable practically all my life. Although I've been retired for some time now, I actually have a timetable for each day pinned up on my kitchen notice-board, although I don't always do what it tells me I should!
A great teacher must also be a great listener and learner. What is the most interesting thing you've learned from working with children?
Working with children teaches us to expect the unexpected. I still teach Christian Religious Education at my local primary school and I never quite know what a child will come out with. I can be floored by their questions - or their amazing comments, especially when I think they weren't even paying attention. Listening is important and a real skill that needs to be learned. I know I often refer to my long-gone Mother, but she was a teacher, too, and she taught us that a conversations is a two-way thing: listening is as important as contributing.
What do you envision for the future of your writing career both at HubPages and in general?
I intend to continue writing with HubPages for as long as possible and love it that I can also earn a little in doing this. I enjoy the interaction with my HubPages friends and often wish I had the time to write more encouraging comments as I appreciate the helpful comments that others write on my hubs. With my general writing, last December I published my tenth book, which was about our time in Papua New Guinea. As with my hubs, I seem to have written on a variety of subjects and for a variety of readers. My present book seems to be progressing slowly as it requires quite an amount of research. Even when I think I know a topic I like to check that my information is correct. HubPages has taught me more about the importance of researching and of making what I have written flow smoothly so that it is easier to read.
