Robin Oatley Interviews Alecia Murphy
Alecia discusses her love of learning, pop culture, and Hubbing
Alecia Murphy is a 2010 alumna of UNC Chapel Hill, where she majored in Sociology and Communication Studies. Alecia mostly writes about pop culture and the 1990s. She joined hubpages about two years ago. Today, Alecia is interviewed by Robin Oatley about her Hubs and where she gets her inspiration.
I asked you for this interview because you were my very first follower and you read and comment on my Hubs all the time. Do you have a fellow Hubber that is special to you in such a way?
I have a lot of followers who are special to me, but one who comes to mind is Cogerson. He was one of the first Hubbers to comment and follow me. Not only that but he introduced me to other Hubbers who have become good friends and supporters over the years like Jeannieinabottle and Sunshine625. So for that I will always be grateful.
You have been a member of HubPages for about two years now. What made you first start writing and publishing your articles on the internet?
I have been writing since childhood. I was one of those strange kids in college who would rather do a final paper than study for a big exam. What drew me to writing online was actually curiosity. I had been out of college for about a year and was looking for a new hobby to take up. I knew I enjoyed writing, so I searched different sites and eventually found HubPages. It just started as a way to write about what I like and ended up being so much more.
While you are clearly a pop culture and 1990s fan, you have written Hubs on a wide range of subjects. What is your main source of inspiration?
Growing up I was a huge nerd (and still am LOL) and was always excited to learn about new things. My favorite subjects in school were history, social studies, and writing. I just liked to absorb what was around me. Most of my free time was spent reading and playing trivia board games- as a result, I retained a lot of random facts. In college my friends would ask me about what was going on in pop culture and the news, since they knew I was always aware. It just became something of a trademark. I figured why not share what I know and want to know with others.
But what I usually do is observe what's around me and try and translate it in a new and interesting way whether it's about shopping, eating, or a good television show.
Do you have one of your Hubs in particular that you like the most? Did you really enjoy writing it, or is it the end result you’re really proud of?
Each Hub comes from a different idea or thought I've had on a certain subject. My favorite Hub so far has probably been "Music Snobs: How to Deal." Looking back on that period of my life is always interesting and I thought, why not talk about something that affects everyone but no one talks about. Being bullied is nothing new, but dealing with it is an ongoing process. I just felt like putting it out and making a positive impact- I wasn't expecting the response it received. But to be honest I feel like some musicians do when the put an album: a Hub is a child in a way. You put so much into it and don't know the result but obviously hope for the best.
If I could give you the opportunity to be anyone else for one day, who would you want to be and why?
Who would I be for a day? I would go with Smokey Robinson. While there are other leaders and entertainers that inspire me, the fact that he is still living his passion after all of these years is amazing. Not to mention he's written some of the most moving and inspiring songs of all time. But only for a day. I don't mind being me that much. :)
