Here’s an example of a penalty.

Manual Webspam Actions Viewable in Webmaster Tools

Webmasters can now check for spam penalties from Google

As Robin mentioned in her latest Blog post, Google has just released a new tool that allows webmasters to see if their subdomains have incurred spam penalties. This tool is incredibly useful for HubPages and for Hubbers because it allows us to identify some of the things that Google considers spam. It also allows Hubbers to make changes to the problematic content and resubmit it for review. Here’s how to check for spam penalties in Webmaster Tools:

  • Go to Webmaster Tools and sign in (or sign up if you don’t have an account yet).
  • Click on your subdomain. Click on “Search Traffic,” then “Manual Actions” in the toolbar on the left.
  • Any manual actions for spam on your HubPages subdomain will be listed.

Once you have reviewed and fixed the spam penalty issues in your content, click the “REQUEST A REVIEW” button to have Google review and reconsider your Hubs.

Pro Tips

No crowding, please! One product per capsule!

Changes to the Amazon and eBay Capsules

One of the things we’ve learned from Webspam Actions in Google Webmaster Tools is that Google considers otherwise excellent Hubs to be spammy when they contain large blocks of Amazon or eBay products in them. To prevent spam penalties on Hubs, we are making some changes to the Amazon and eBay Capsules:

  • Amazon and eBay Capsules will now only display one product per capsule.
    • Hubbers are still free to use more than one product capsule in Hubs.
    • Old Hubs with many hand-selected products will remain unchanged unless the Hub is edited (in which case, only one product will be allowed per capsule going forward).
    • The number of keyword or “search-driven” products per capsule will be reduced to one on all Hubs.
      • All eBay and Amazon product capsules with products chosen by keyword will be reduced. This includes both new and old Hubs.

We understand that reducing keyword products per capsule to one may cause some formatting issues in older Hubs, and we deeply regret the stress and inconvenience we know this will cause for some. But we want to protect Hubbers from manual action penalties in order to help restore traffic and reduce spam. We have high hopes for the changes we’re making and we sincerely thank you for sticking it out with us through the growing pains, dear writers!

For more information on these changes, check out the Blog:

Insights on Humor, Creative Writing, and Family

You write everything from poetry to short stories to humor on HubPages.  What do you enjoy writing the most?

I would have to say short stories. Unfortunately HubPages isn’t ideal for them, though it’s no fault of theirs. Most people don’t Google short stories. I’m working on adapting to the new format. Even writing a few (gasp) serious hubs. Wish me luck!

Congratulations on becoming a new Dad!  Do you think being a father will change the way you write?

Definitely. I have one hub titled Why I’m scared to have kids. I guess I wasn’t too scared. Now my time is short and I’ve become a sappy sucker for a drooling smile…whatever that means.

I noticed you include your wife in many of your hubs.  What does she think about your writing?

She’s a great sport, even when I throw her under the bus for a laugh. She’s one of the funniest people I know, intentionally or not. As a teacher, she’s been behind the writing since day one, encouraging me every step of the way. She even read one of my Hubs to her 2nd grade class, so it’s a good thing I kept it clean!

You had a “How to Write a Song” series which I really enjoyed.  I especially liked “Writing a Rap Song.”  Do you have any plans to write more Hubs in the series?

Those were fun! I need to do another series...hmmmm.

You cover a wide variety of topics in your Hubs. Is there any topic you’ve tried to cover but decided against it?

I used to shy away from politics but now it’s gotten to the point where all you can do is laugh. We’re so divided!

When you look back at all your Hubs, which are your three favorites?

My favorite would have to be My interview with my dog. I also like Today’s Superhero and Fun with Spam. I also have a slew of half moons that need to be deleted or fixed. Some of them are quite cringe-worthy.
