Promoting Your Hubs with Facebook

A quick guide to incorporating HubPages into your Facebook activity

Facebook is the #1 largest social network in the world. Lots of people post, socialize, plan events, chat, and upload photos on Facebook every day ( including us). It's a great online destination for sharing information, and that includes promoting Hubs. You can always "Like" and share Hubs, but getting people interested can take a bit more finesse. Here are a few quick and easy tips for effectively sharing your Hubs on Facebook:

  • If you use the "Like" button on a Hub to share it with your Facebook friends, be sure to include a custom post or description. For example, if I post a Hub about bird feathers to my Facebook, I might write something like "Today I learned that not all peacocks are beautifully colored! Did you know that the females are all plain brown? Weird."
  • Hand-select the friends you share Hubs with. For example, I might post an article on a friend's Timeline instead of my own with a message like "Hey Sarah, I know you love garage sales. Check out this neat article on how to identify valuable items." You can also separate your Facebook friends into " Groups" so you can share different things with different people. Consider separating people by interests so you can share particular Hubs only with those who might be interested. This helps you avoid alienating friends who don't care about sports or pets, etc, while allowing them to read your posts on things they DO like.
  • Post stuff other than Hubs. This is probably the most important tip. People become your Facebook friend because they care about YOU and want to know what's going on in your life and what you're thinking about. If you do nothing but promote your Hubs, your friends will loose interest. Even if you've created a Facebook account specifically for HubPages, a good ratio to maintain is 1/3 self-promotion to 2/3 other content. In other words, for every Hub you share, you should be making roughly 2 other posts about that funny thing your cat did today or the weird weather this week or how you love your new haircut.

How to Share Hubs with Images on Facebook

If you want to give your Hubs a little extra oomph when you post them on Facebook, an image is a great way to do it. Posting your Hub with a photo is easy and attractive. To see some examples, check out the official HubPages Facebook page. Here's how to include a photo in your post.

  1. Choose a legally-used, properly attributed photo from one of your Hubs (your own photos work best) and save it to your computer if you don't already have it.
  2. Navigate to your Facebook page.
  3. Click on the "Status" box to start your post.
  4. Choose the "Photo" above the blank text box.
  5. Click on "Upload Photos/Video."
  6. Select the desired photo from your computer and click "Open." The photo should load in your status field.
  7. Include a custom description and add the link to the Hub you're sharing.

Insights from an Artist, Fashionista, and Writer

I'd have to say: Don't be obsessed with looking your "best." Women concern themselves so much with popular trends and what looks "the best," but this leaves absolutely no room for individuality and expression. On any given day, a woman can feel like a diva or she could feel like a nun. She could feel like sexy, mischievous Cat Woman on Friday night and then when Monday rolls around she could feel fierce and brave like Wonder Woman. Makeup and fashion give women the ability to show the world these beautiful, hidden sides of their personalities.

You mention in your profile that writing is a deeply meaningful part of your life. When did you first begin writing? What inspires you to write Hubs?

When I was thirteen I became best friends with another girl my age. We lived in the middle of nowhere and there was nothing to do so we'd pass the time by writing stories everyday. We were the main characters and we'd do all these really cool things like have superpowers and meet celebrities. Before I knew it, I couldn't imagine going a day without writing!

Sometimes, I think things get over-complicated, and those who aren't rocket scientists or really wealthy get left behind. I write for average, everyday people who just want to enjoy their lives as simply as possible.

Your drawing instruction Hubs are great. Where did you learn to draw?

I was always drawing instead of listening in class (even in college). Bullying was always a huge problem for me as I was growing up, so drawing was how I got through everyday without going crazy, I guess. Also, I was a big fan of anime as a kid. I wanted to draw the pretty girls and cute cats like in the shows!

What is your #1 video game of all time?

This is a toughie! If I absolutely had to choose just one, I'd say Metal Gear Solid. It has the perfect mix of drama, romance, action, humor and espionage. It's still my favorite game fifteen years after I first played it. I think I played it last week!

Of all your Hubs, which is your favorite and why?

I'd have to say my "15 Reasons Why You Should Adopt a Retired Racing Greyhound" one. That one came straight from the heart, especially knowing that it could clear up some misconceptions about those beautiful giants while possibly convincing someone to save a life.

What advice would you like to offer other Hubbers?

If you're swayed by compliments, you'll be swayed by criticism. Love your writing first and foremost before looking to others for approval.
