Thoughts from an Inspired and Passionate Writer
How did you discover and start writing on HubPages?
I actually found HubPages several times in search results while doing other things. I decided to click and see what it was all about one day. I signed up and was hooked.
What is your all-time favorite hub you've written?
Wow, that’s a tough one. I really enjoyed the
101 Frugal Living Tips one. I love writing from my heart and experience, especially when it’s something I think will benefit a lot of people. I had a lot of good feedback on that one and it went viral at one point. :)
What methods do you do to beat writer's block?
My tip for this is to just write. Open a blank page and write whatever comes to you, even if it’s writing about how your mind is mush and you have nothing to say. The act of writing itself will often get the juices flowing if you just let the words flow. I also sometimes use writing prompts as a way to trigger creative thought and get things moving. Mind maps are also fun and can help drum up lots of ideas in a very short period of time.
Who would you say is your biggest inspiration when you're writing?
Tough question, I really don’t know. I think my biggest motivation is providing inspiration and/or useful information to others. Those who read what I write and gain something from it are my inspiration.
You say in your profile that you "believe writing can change the world - for better or worse." What kind of writing do you think is the most beneficial to the world? What kind do you think hurts it the most?
Writing is everywhere. It shapes our lives whether we perceive it or not. From magazine advertising to billboards, web search results, textbooks, or any books, magazines and political propaganda; words influence who we are and help shape what we become as we learn and grow. When I was young, it was hammered into me by teachers and caregivers that “If you can read you can do anything.” I took that with me and valued that lesson my whole life. Any writing that teaches, inspires greatness in others, encourages exploration, piques curiosity or imparts knowledge is usually a good thing. The bad things I think are hate speech propaganda, writing that intentionally spreads misinformation or lies to push an agenda, etc. I also dislike misleading advertising that hooks people with false promises. You know the type:” Lose 20 lbs effortlessly in a week” that type of junk – oh, and tabloids. Tabloids are also evil. ;)
What piece of advice would you give your fellow Hubbers?
Take advantage of the great resources at HubPages. There is a lot to learn in the
Learning Center, and more importantly than that (sorry HP), is a great community full of interesting people. There are always excellent Questions and Answers, for example. Hopping Hubs can be a great way to learn something new you might not have ever known about otherwise. So I say, look for opportunities as with anything else in life.
