How did you get started writing on HubPages?
I started with HubPages purely by chance. While browsing the web, I came across a listing of websites that people could write on to earn money. I was already writing articles on another website to earn money, but I wasn't receiving credit for those articles, and I couldn't control how they were being used. After doing some research on Hubpages, I saw that I would have control over my content and would receive recognition for it. Soon after joining HubPages, I quit writing articles on the other website, and haven't looked back since.
You've been a member for almost 2 years, and you have 96 published Hubs! What's your secret for staying so prolific?
When I first joined HubPages, I struggled with writing for long periods of time. I have always wanted to write a sci-fi novel, but each time I would start I would lose interest and move on to something else. I did the same thing with HubPages. I wrote a good amount of Hubs when I first started, then stopped for many months. Fortunately, I found the the Apprenticeship Program. The program pushed me to write not only a lot of quality content, but to write consistently for six months. This was a personal challenge for me, which I am happy to say I succeeded in. Now, I write Hubs that are twice as long as the Hubs I wrote in the Apprenticeship Program, but I enjoy it as well. I like designing a Hub with my own ideas and experience for others to enjoy.
Your profile mentions that you've been a supervisor for over 5 years, and many of your Hubs are excellent business resources. Are most of them written from personal experience?
I would have to say all of my business and supervisory Hubs are based on personal experience. When I first promoted to a supervisory position, I was young. I was supervising those who had been at that job for many years. I made a lot of missteps along the way. Writing Hubs on supervising and other work-related issues not only allowed me to share my experiences with others, but allowed me to reflect about how I performed as a supervisor and what I could improve upon.
Another thing I noticed is that articles relating to supervising, business, etc. were very dry to read. I have tried to read business articles and found myself bored. I feel the best way to teach on boring topics is to make them as interactive as possible. HubPages allowed me to write Hubs that allow readers to engage with the content I'm providing.
How did you first get into writing?
I actually never liked writing in school. If I was given an assignment, I would wait until the last minute and never put much effort into it, so I thought I would never get into writing. Fortunately, I joined a journalism class in junior high and high school, and found that I loved writing for the school newspaper. It gave me great pride to walk through my school and seeing other students reading the school newspaper. Once high school ended, I never gave writing another thought, since I soon found a job and focused on that. It wasn't until writing on the internet became so popular I had the itch to write again. Since joining HubPages, I have a strong desire to write all of the time.
You've written many video game Hubs as well. What is your favorite thing about video games?
Video games have gone from being something simple to an interactive story, which was very easy to translate into some fun and easy-to-write Hubs. But mostly video games offer me a chance to unwind from work, writing, and everything else going on around me. I can sink myself into a good game and forget about my problems for a few hours. The other reason I like video games is that they keep my mind going. Playing video games with a heavy story set in an different universe actually feeds into my desire to write. As I stated before, I have a strong desire to write a sci-fi novel. Each time I play a video game, my creativity starts flowing and I want to sit down to write.
Of all your Hubs, which one is your favorite?
This is a hard choice. They are so many I consider my favorite. If I had to choose just one, it would be “How to be a Good Boss and Supervisor in the Workplace.” This Hub was my first success on HubPages. It's a Hub that can apply to all supervisors, no matter the type of work they are in. When someone states that my Hub helped them be a better supervisor, I always get a sense of satisfaction from that.
