Insights from a Science Student who Loves to Learn
How did you find out about HubPages and what made you decide to start writing with us?
As a student, I'd been searching for work for quite a while, but it was near impossible to find a suitable job, and harder still to find work that I would actually enjoy. With the holidays approaching, I began searching online for guidance, and came across multiple suggestions for writing online. My heart leapt at the idea. Writing had always been a sort of idle fancy for me, so to hear that I could apply my hobby in a practical sense was thoroughly exciting. Hearing wonderful things about HubPages, I jumped on the website, and my enthusiasm grew the more I read about it. Before long, I was signed up and itching to write.
You mention in your profile that you're a student. What are you studying?
Just about everything! At the moment, I'm a lowly undergraduate enrolled in an Arts/Science double degree, which, thankfully, caters to indecisive individuals such as myself. I've taken units in astronomy, history, linguistics, statistics; you name it, I've done it. For my Science degree, the plan is to major in molecular biology with a minor in physiology, and for my Arts, major in literary studies with a minor in philosophy.
You've only been a member of HubPages for 2 weeks, but you're already writing Hubs like a pro. What was your most helpful resource in learning to write a great Hub so quickly?
Thank you! I made sure to exploit the HubPages Learning Center. Of course, the years I spent in school feverishly scribbling down essays and practising my writing likely helped, but the Learning Center was an invaluable resource. It had the answer to every single question I could think of, and then some. From what topics I should cover, to crediting images, to the format of each hub, to how to make money, and to simply help quell the nerves I felt starting out as a new writer, consulting the Learning Center was genuinely helpful. The key to success, I think, is knowing your work inside and out, so preparation and thorough research is key.
Where and how do you do research for your Hubs?
I use a combination of resources. Starting out I simply research online and decide what would be appropriate to include in the allotted space of one Hub. Then (as my Hubs have been centred on educational topics), I integrate the knowledge I have gained from my studies, consult my notes and the stacks of books my family has compiled over the years. I'm too paranoid to publish a Hub without consulting multiple resources. Then, I rinse and repeat this cycle multiple times, editing and refining as I go. Though I promise it's much more fun than the washing machine-like chore I'm making it sound like; especially if you're passionate about your content!
When did you first develop an interest in writing, and what keeps you writing today?
I've loved to write for as long as I can remember. At the age of three I was already crudely scrawling my name over every surface I could find, and my parents have always encouraged me to read, read, read. It's so easy to become enchanted with the written word. You have the power to exploit imagination and transport mediocrity into an impossible new world, immortalise revolutionary ideas, sensationalise sensations, educate, argue, inspire, and so forth. I write because with words, I can create anything I desire, then torture and beautify my imperfect splutters which fail me in spontaneous mediums.
What are your writing goals for the future?
Realistically, I have to admit that I'm uncertain how writing will fit into my future, but I remain optimistic. I enjoy it too much not to be. Hopefully, I'll continue writing for HubPages, and one day, I would love to write a book. For now though, I'll keep doing what I love: learning and writing. I'll see where my words and studies take me.
