The Rising Star Competition will be back after the holidays!

Rising Star Announcement

The Rising Star Contest Is on Hold

Happy Wednesday, Hubbers! I hope you're getting ready for a cheerful holiday season. I have a quick announcement for you this week. The Rising Star Competitions for the next 2 weeks fall on Christmas Day and New Years Day. So, we'll be pausing those contests, since nobody will be in the HP office to run them. You'll receive your Weekly Newsletter as usual, but without the Rising Star section, and voting will not begin again until the week of January 5th. We're sorry to put the contest on hold and I know you'll show our new writers your usual warmth and support when it starts up again in January. :)

Helicopter Parenting: Sheltering Children Causes a Lifetime of Dependence

by JenniferReeves published 45 hours ago

In recent decades, overprotective parents and caregivers feel the need to shelter their children. Parents want to protect their children to an extreme by hovering over them all the time. Society uses the term “helicopter parents” to label them. Studies have shown that sheltering a child does not usually result in an ideal adult lifestyle. Experts have found that an overprotective parenting style can cause children to have less coping skills and low self-esteem.

Pro Tips

There's a lot of hard work behind a picture-perfect Christmas!

Simple Tips to Reduce Holiday Stress

The holidays are a time for family and celebration, but they can also be a very stressful time for many. Buying gifts, sending cards, decorating, cooking, volunteering, keeping the kids happy, keeping the pets off the decorations, putting decorations on the pets, making sure the difficult family members get along (or keeping them at opposite ends of the room)... it can be a heck of a time for a guy or gal! Here are a few simple tips to help keep your holiday stress to a minimum this year:

  • Plan Carefully. A little bit of early planning can save a LOT of stress and work later. Keep shopping and t0-do lists. Carry a little day planner. The less you leave to the last minute, the less frazzled you'll feel when Christmas is days away.
  • Set aside me time. When things get hectic, we often forget to take time for ourselves. As the holidays approach, set a little time aside to center yourself before diving back into the fray, even if it's just an occasional 10 minutes to enjoy a nice cup of tea. You deserve it.
  • Ask for help. We all have that person (or people) who try to take advantage of our generosity and good nature. They never offer to help and sometimes even ask us to take on more tasks and chores for them. Don't be afraid to set boundaries, refuse extra work you can't handle, and even ask that person to take a bit more responsibility. You may be surprised by her willingness to help; it genuinely may not have occurred to her that you're not a superhero.
  • Keep it simple. Or elegant, if you will. Don't feel up to decorating the whole house? Add a few carefully-placed accents for a stylish, minimalist look. Can't handle a 4-course Christmas dinner? The slow cooker is your friend. Make large quantities of easy family favorites. There are lots of holiday tasks that can be simplified without lessening their impact.

Insights from a Science Student who Loves to Learn

How did you find out about HubPages and what made you decide to start writing with us?

As a student, I'd been searching for work for quite a while, but it was near impossible to find a suitable job, and harder still to find work that I would actually enjoy. With the holidays approaching, I began searching online for guidance, and came across multiple suggestions for writing online. My heart leapt at the idea. Writing had always been a sort of idle fancy for me, so to hear that I could apply my hobby in a practical sense was thoroughly exciting. Hearing wonderful things about HubPages, I jumped on the website, and my enthusiasm grew the more I read about it. Before long, I was signed up and itching to write.

You mention in your profile that you're a student. What are you studying?

Just about everything! At the moment, I'm a lowly undergraduate enrolled in an Arts/Science double degree, which, thankfully, caters to indecisive individuals such as myself. I've taken units in astronomy, history, linguistics, statistics; you name it, I've done it. For my Science degree, the plan is to major in molecular biology with a minor in physiology, and for my Arts, major in literary studies with a minor in philosophy.

You've only been a member of HubPages for 2 weeks, but you're already writing Hubs like a pro. What was your most helpful resource in learning to write a great Hub so quickly?

Thank you! I made sure to exploit the HubPages Learning Center. Of course, the years I spent in school feverishly scribbling down essays and practising my writing likely helped, but the Learning Center was an invaluable resource. It had the answer to every single question I could think of, and then some. From what topics I should cover, to crediting images, to the format of each hub, to how to make money, and to simply help quell the nerves I felt starting out as a new writer, consulting the Learning Center was genuinely helpful. The key to success, I think, is knowing your work inside and out, so preparation and thorough research is key.

Where and how do you do research for your Hubs?

I use a combination of resources. Starting out I simply research online and decide what would be appropriate to include in the allotted space of one Hub. Then (as my Hubs have been centred on educational topics), I integrate the knowledge I have gained from my studies, consult my notes and the stacks of books my family has compiled over the years. I'm too paranoid to publish a Hub without consulting multiple resources. Then, I rinse and repeat this cycle multiple times, editing and refining as I go. Though I promise it's much more fun than the washing machine-like chore I'm making it sound like; especially if you're passionate about your content!

When did you first develop an interest in writing, and what keeps you writing today?

I've loved to write for as long as I can remember. At the age of three I was already crudely scrawling my name over every surface I could find, and my parents have always encouraged me to read, read, read. It's so easy to become enchanted with the written word. You have the power to exploit imagination and transport mediocrity into an impossible new world, immortalise revolutionary ideas, sensationalise sensations, educate, argue, inspire, and so forth. I write because with words, I can create anything I desire, then torture and beautify my imperfect splutters which fail me in spontaneous mediums.

What are your writing goals for the future?

Realistically, I have to admit that I'm uncertain how writing will fit into my future, but I remain optimistic. I enjoy it too much not to be. Hopefully, I'll continue writing for HubPages, and one day, I would love to write a book. For now though, I'll keep doing what I love: learning and writing. I'll see where my words and studies take me.
