Image Theft on HubPages

And the use of stolen photos on Hubs

We've noticed a lot of concern lately in the Forums, and especially in comments on the Feedback Survey, about Hubbers using stolen photos in Hubs. We hear you! We know how much it bothers you, and we're with you all the way. Knowing is half the battle, so today I'm going to answer a few common questions we frequently get asked about stolen images used on HubPages:

Why doesn't HubPages just Unpublish all Hubs that don't cite image sources? Under copyright law, the owner of a photo does not have to cite sources, and public domain photos do not require citation either. So, we can't force Hubbers to cite their sources, and we can't assume that Hubbers are using images illegally simply because they do not add a citation. We do, however, require proper citation (even of the author's own photos and public domain photos) for participation in many of our programs and contests.

What about watermarked images and photos that cite a copyrighted source? Can't HubPages Unpublish those Hubs? It is legal to use a photo with the permission of its owner. Even if a Hubber is using an image that probably does not belong to her, we can not assume that she doesn't have permission to use it. But just like with public domain and Hubber-owned photos, many of our programs and contests require "by permission" or "with permission" to be included when the Hubber has permission to use someone else's photo.

What if HubPages knows for sure that a Hub's images are stolen? Surely HP can do something? The short answer is that we can’t be absolutely certain that an image is stolen unless we receive a DMCA Complaint from its rightful owner. So, sadly, our hands are tied here too, even when we are 99% sure. Only the legal owner of a photo can file a DMCA Complaint. Since HubPages does not own the stolen photos, we don't have grounds to discipline Hubbers who use them. However, we do take down content immediately when a DMCA Complaint is filed.

So what can HubPages do? We know that photographers who have their photos stolen are just as devastated as Hubbers who have Hubs stolen. Many photographers even lose income from the stolen photos just like Hubbers do from stolen Hubs. We do our best to provide educational resources for Hubbers to easily learn the rules of legal image use and proper citation, to suggest places to find legal images easily (like Wikimedia Commons and FreeDigitalPhotos.net), to require legal use and proper citation for participation in many official HubPages programs and contests, and to raise awareness among Hubbers about the seriousness of image theft.

How You Can Help Fight Stolen Photos

Since many of you have expressed that you feel as strongly as we do about stolen photos on HubPages, here are a few ways you can get involved and help us promote legal image use in the Community:

  1. Educate your fellow Hubbers. Help us spread the word! Many Hubbers are not stealing photos on purpose. They simply aren't aware that the photos they see in Google Images and on websites actually belong to someone and aren't free to use. You can help by kindly educating your friends and colleagues on HubPages and by letting new Hubbers know about legal image use.
  2. Ask about questionable photos you see on Hubs. If a photo on a Hub seems suspicious, ask the author about it. Did she take it herself? Did the owner give her permission to use his photo? If not, a polite reminder about legal image use and a link to the Learning Center entry might be in order.
  3. Notify the owner. Is someone using a photo from your favorite food blog on a Hub?  Help the blog's owner protect her work by sending her a quick email. Recognize a photo from a copyrighted website? Send the site's owner a brief note. Encourage the photo's rightful owner to file a Notice of Copyright Infringement with HubPages, which will help us to rectify the situation.

Insights from a Detail-Oriented Nature Lover

What does writing on HubPages mean to you? And has that changed over the two years since you started?

Writing for HubPages means an awful lot to me, because it gave me my first chance to write about the things I love for a wider audience, e.g. other than myself and maybe my mother. Over the course of two years, that hasn't changed at all. What has changed is my confidence, it's flourished and blossomed to the point where I'm finally working properly on fulfilling my dream of writing and publishing a novel.

Most of your Hubs are on Natural History, Human History, Environmentalism, Science, and Myths. But every now and then you throw us a curved ball - a poem or an article about online dating - how do you decide what to write about?

For me it all comes down to inspiration, I tend to focus more on Natural and Human History because those are the things that inspire me the most. However, every now and then I feel like doing something different, hence the aforementioned curved ball. Incidentally the online dating articles were inspired by my own experiences in what can be a rather chaotic and illogical world.

In your profile you point out that you are an avid reader. What are you reading right now?

At the moment I've just started reading Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth. I watched the TV series a while ago, and really enjoyed it for its realistic and filthy portrayal of Medieval life.

You clearly pay attention to detail in all your carefully crafted Hubs. Are you a natural perfectionist or is that something you have to work at?

To be honest I've never really considered myself a perfectionist, because I believe that perfection is impossible, and like beauty it is often only found only in the eye of the beholder. I simply have an eye for detail and thus always take my time when putting my Hubs together.

As a keen bird and nature watcher you must love being outdoors. How do you get the balance between that and writing?

I tend to use the weekends I have off as my time for bird watching and simply revelling in the outdoors. While normally I use weekday evenings for writing, as I often find it to be the perfect cure for a long hard day at work.

Finally, what's your favorite pudding?

Easy answer- a bowel of lukewarm Ambrosia custard, although a nice warm chocolate brownie is a very, very close second.
