How to Organize a Hub

These techniques can help:

One of the key elements of a well-crafted article is organization. It can also be one of the most frustrating aspects (but it doesn't have to be). With proper planning, any writer can easily organize ideas in a way that fits her preferred writing style. Here are a few tips to help you get comfortable with writing a Hub that reads beautifully and flows logically:

  • Take notes. Have you ever come up with a great topic for an article, but didn't have time to write a Hub just then? Take notes about the information you want to include. New ideas will come to you over time, and you'll want to have them at your fingertips later so you can dive right in when you're ready. For example, if you've decided to write a simple step-by-step article on how to groom your dog, you may realize an hour later that you ought to include a paragraph on how often to groom your dog. The next morning, you may decide you should also tell your readers what breeds benefit most from a regular grooming. Keep track of these great ideas or they're likely to be forgotten and might not make it into your Hub.
  • When brainstorming, think of your article as a puzzle. Each paragraph (or Text Capsule subheading on HubPages) is like a puzzle piece. You know that you want to write about dog grooming. You realize from the notes you've taken that the subjects you want to include are: the benefits of a well-groomed dog, a step-by-step guide to doing the grooming, how to tell when you can do the grooming yourself vs. when you need a professional groomer, a check list of breeds that need regular grooming, and advice on how often to groom. Great! Shuffle those pieces around until they fit into an orderly and logical Hub.
  • Don't force it. It's inevitable that you'll end up with related ideas that don't quite fit in with the rest of a Hub's content. An important part of writing is knowing what to leave out. Don't force those ideas to fit. Doing so will result in awkward transitions and a disjointed experience for your reader. Instead, consider whether those misfit ideas might warrant a whole new Hub. You'll end up with more Hub inspiration than you know what to do with. :)

Pro Tips

Is it time to start a separate Hub?

Should My Idea Get Its Own Hub?

As mentioned above, during the writing process it's likely that you'll come up with many good ideas that don't quite belong in your Hub. It can be tempting to include those great ideas simply because you want readers to see them, and not because they are actually a perfect match for the Hub you're currently writing. Here are a few tips on how to tell when it's better to give those ideas a Hub of their very own:

  • Your idea is of limited relevance to the Hub's audience. While composing your dog grooming Hub, you may find yourself writing things like "If your dog requires a professional groomer, Sally's Grooming Service is the best in San Francisco." This observation is a useful one, but it's unlikely that a large percentage of your readers happen to be from San Francisco. Instead of including that comment in your grooming Hub, it makes more sense to write a whole new Hub on the best groomers in San Francisco, so that readers from SF can easily find that information.
  • Your idea is a tangent. Does your idea relate directly to your Hub's title? If not, it is probably a tangent. If your Hub's title is "How to Groom a Dog: A Step-By-Step Guide," a paragraph on dog training is probably not a great fit because it has nothing to do with grooming (a more specific paragraph on how to train your dog to behave for a grooming, on the other hand, would be perfect). Help your readers find your training advice more easily by making it into a separate Hub.
  • Your idea takes up more than half of a Hub. While writing your dog grooming Hub, you realize that the section on deciding to groom your dog vs. paying a professional groomer is huge. You've written 5 paragraphs on the subject without realizing it, and this section is the size of the entire rest of your Hub. If you have that much material to share on a specific subtopic, it's probably time to give it a separate Hub.
