Testing for improvement!

Happy Wednesday! Today I've got some good news. We're testing some visual changes on Related Hubs that we think will help boost reader engagement with HubPages as a whole. You may already have noticed these changes on Hubs or read about them in the Forums, but for those who haven't, here's the quick overview:

What are Related Hubs? The Related Hubs section appears at the bottom of most Featured Hubs. It is located just above the comments. The Hubs that show up in this section are algorithmically determined to be more relevant to what readers are searching for. Related Hubs are important because they help spread the HubLove by encouraging those readers to read more Hubs and stay on HubPages longer.

Why are you changing the design of Related Hubs? We're always trying to make HubPages better. Other than ads, Related Hubs are what readers click on most frequently. Through careful testing we hope to significantly improve performance.

What are you testing for? Our main goals for Related Hubs are to increase Hub engagement (which happens when readers click anywhere on a Hub), and to increase the clickthrough rate ( CTR) on Related Hubs to get readers visiting as many Hubs as possible.

How long will the tests go on? We will continue testing temporary changes for the next couple of weeks. When we've settled on high-performing layout that we intend to make permanent, we let Hubbers know.

Related Hub Tests

For those of you who are curious to learn more about the tests we're doing on Related Hubs, here are a few of the things we've already tested:

• Vertical vs. horizontal Related Hub layout.
• Hub title font size.
• Frames vs. no frames.
• Thumbnail image size.
• Number of Related Hubs listed.
• Single vs. double column Hub layout.
• Folded corner vs. square frames.

So far, with a few tweaks we've managed to achieve a 48% increase on the Related Hub CTR and a 10% boost in overall Hub engagement, which is great news! Here are a few more things we intend to test over the next couple of weeks:

• Adding an EC banner to Editor's Choice Hubs.
• Continued testing of the number of Related Hubs displayed.
• Continued testing on thumbnail image size.

If things look a little weird, don't worry. We'll let you know when we've settled on a final design, and we're taking aesthetics into account as well as performance. :)
