Create an Online Writing Portfolio on HubPages

Hubbing for Your Reputation

Happy Wednesday, friends! First of all, I'd like to say that I'm sorry for the lack of Newsletter last week. I was out of commission with an inner ear infection- yuck! But I'm feeling much better and Newsletters will be rolling out as usual from this week on. :)

Now on to your regularly-scheduled programming: Most Hubbers are active on HubPages to make money, to gain an audience, or both, but this week I'd like to give some attention to the 3rd incredibly valuable benefit of Hubbing; creating a searchable online portfolio. Active Hubbers with a corpus of interesting, informative Hubs are benefiting from their work on HubPages in ways they may not even realize. Here are just a few:

  • Employers may find your content-- and be impressed. When potential employers or clients Google your name, they will be able to easily see your Hubs and have the opportunity to browse your work (without having to follow any special links or create an account to do so).
  • Hubs are an opportunity to show the online community that you are hard working and well-educated. With your Hubs regularly available online, it's a chance to associate solid work with your name and establish an impressive personal brand.
  • Hubs show that you are an authority. By Hubbing about subjects you are passionate about, you leave an online trail that shows your expertise in these topics.
  • A HubPages portfolio is readily accessible to all. There is no need to carry around physical copies of your writing when you can simply pull up your Hubs at any time on any computer and easily share your work with other writers, publishers, or anyone else you might be networking with.

Pro Tips

HubPages is like your online business card.

Portfolio Building Tips

If you like the sound of Hubbing as an online portfolio and a conduit for bolstering your personal brand and reputation, here are a few tips for making the most of it:

  1. Use your real name. If you aren't already, you should be using your real name at HubPages. This will make it easier for people to find you online. You don't need to delete your existing account or Hubs, but consider creating a second account under your name to publish Hubs you want to show off.
  2. Include your HubPages profile on your business cards. This is a particularly good idea for freelancers because it lets clients know where they can find a large sample of your work to browse.
  3. Link to your HubPages profile on social media. This is an especially good idea if you maintain a business website or profile for your services. Your LinkedIn profile is a particularly good place to include your HubPages account. Add it as a project or a professional gallery so that all of your colleagues can visit and look at your Hubs.

LinkedIn is a great site for professionals, including writers. Consider making a profile if you don't have one yet:
