Writing a long Hub? No worries!

How To Handle Hubs with Loads of Content

Worried your hubs are too long? Here's what to do:

Lately, some Hubbers have been asking what to do with Hubs that are extremely long (And I think it's totally awesome that so many of you have so much to say!). In general, you want to make each Hub the best resource possible on your subject, and that often means writing a long post. However, when a Hub gets to a certain length, you have a few options.

How long should a Hub be?

The data shows that the optimal length for online content is about 7 minutes (for your readers). Buffer confirms that the time your readers spend on your posts is greatest at about 1,600 words and that social shares typically increase for posts in the 1,600-2,500+ range. So if your post is in the 4,000+ range, it's time to consider breaking up your content. If it's shorter, it may be a good idea to keep it all in the same Hub.

How should a Hub be broken up? Here are a few tips on breaking up Hubs that cover the same or similar topics:

  • Do not include "Part 2," "#2," "Chapter 2," or any other enumeration scheme in your Hub's title that might lead readers to believe that the Hub is not a stand-alone resource in and of itself. Because each of your Hubs are stand-alone resources that completely cover the subject in the title, right? Right? Good.
  • Do break Hubs up so that each Hub covers a slightly different aspect or angle of the same topic.
  • Do give each Hub a more specific title. Instead of a 10,000 word article on "Cat Grooming," you might consider 1,600-3,000-word installments such as "Cat Grooming: How to Trim Kitty's Nails," "Cat Grooming: How To Brush Kitty's Coat," "Cat Grooming: Should I Shave My Long-Haired Cat," and so on.
  • Do be sure each Hub is an exhaustive resource on the particular aspect of the subject it addresses.
