HubScore Update Places More Emphasis on Quality

Happy Wednesday, Hubbers! I'm very pleased to bring you some good news this week. We've been listening to your feedback, and we've decided to make some long-overdue changes to HubScore. As of last week, we have deemphasized the effect a Hub's traffic will have on its HubScore, and we have increased the emphasis of quality on the score. We know that traffic is not necessarily a good indication of quality, and we want the new scores to reflect that. Though we can not give specific details on this algorithm (it's our secret sauce), questions we ask when determining quality may include things like:

  • Does the typical reader actually read most or all of the Hub?
  • Does he vote in a poll, leave a comment, rate the recipe, take a quiz, or leave feedback (useful/funny/awesome/interesting)?
  • Does she share the Hub on social media?
  • If the reader was referred by a search engine such as Google, did he find the information that he was looking for?

You can read more about these changes in Marina's Blog Post. Keep an eye out because we plan to announce some similar changes to Hubber Score in the near future as well. ;)

Pro Tips

The distribution of HubScores on HubPages.

How to Use HubScore

Since HubScore is now more reflective of Hub quality than ever, there are a number of useful things you can do with it. (Remember that HubScore is not an exact science and should be used as a relative guideline rather than an absolute grade for your Hubs).

  • Use HubScore to see where your Hubs fall compared with the other Hubs on HubPages. Are they average, above average, or below average? If your Hubs are on the low end of the curve, you should consider making some improvements.
  • Use HubScore to figure out which Hubs to edit first. Your lowest-scoring Hubs may be hurting your subdomain. We recommend starting with the lowest-scoring Hubs that receive the most traffic when you update your Hubs.
  • Use HubScore to figure out which Hubs might benefit from a little keyword tweaking. Do you have high-scoring Hubs with very little traffic? People may be using different keywords to search for your Hub's subject than you used to write it. Check your Hub's title and subtitles to make sure they are clear and descriptive and make sure you are using words and phrases similar to what people are likely to actually be typing into Google.
