Holiday Hubbing

Turn Your Experiences into Hubs!

The fall/winter holiday season is fast approaching, and it's the perfect time to create Hubs with loads of personal experience. Don't forget to pay attention to the things you learn and the problems you solve for inspiration. Here are some examples of great Hub ideas:

  • DIY Halloween costume instructions. Did you put together a costume or sew one for yourself, your kids, or even your pet? Write a tutorial showing others how to recreate your fabulous costume.
  • Family favorite Thanksgiving recipes. If you live in the US, Thanksgiving may be a long-standing family tradition. Since you're already preparing the food, don't forget to take photos and share any unique or unusual family recipes or cooking secrets. Bonus Tip: You can
  • Holiday shopping research. If you're buying holiday gifts, share your research with your readers. Did you have to look up which fitness band is best in a certain price range? What kind of gifts are good for 12-year-olds who love to read? Practical gifts for new moms? Write a Hub about it!
  • Other general tips and advice from your experience. Think about what other situations and challenges you navigate this holiday season and how you may be able to help others through them. Possible scenarios include things like How to Safely Trick-or-Treat with a Dog, How to Survive Christmas with the Family for Introverts, How to Decorate for the Holidays on a Budget, etc.

Too Busy for Hubbing? No Problem!

The holidays may be a wonderful source of Hub material, but they're also a busy, stressful time for many. Can't scrape together the spare time to sit down and write a Hub? No problem! Here are a few quick and easy things you can do to help you stay organized and ready to crank out some fabulous Hubs when the holidays are over:

  • Take photos of everything. Food, people, decorations, the outdoors, the steps to your recipes and projects, the places you visit. Documenting what you've done means you'll have lots of great photos to use when you're ready to write.
  • Take notes. Whether it's on a smartphone, a voice recorder, or an old-fashioned pad and pen, make sure you get those ideas down while you have them.
  • Outline. Create a simple outline for the Hubs you want to write if you have a few spare minutes. Here's a great guide to outlining by blogger Ali Luke if you're trying it for the first time.
  • Stay organized. It can really move things along if you keep all your photos, notes, outlines, etc in separate folders organized by Hub. Google Drive is great for this because it's free and you can use it on any device with computer access.

Jeramey Conrad's Hub is an interesting argument for ending the American system of tipping for service. His point is clear and logical and supported by lots of relevant information and examples. Fascinating read. Do you think it's time to retire this tradition?
