Coming Soon: More SEO-Friendly Image Sources

An Update to Image Source UI

Happy Wednesday, friends! This week I have a minor update to announce. Soon we will be changing the way image attribution appears on Hubs. We believe this change will help clear outbound link penalties from Google associated with broken, spammy, and misused links in the image source section.

When the change is implemented, signed out users will see a letter "I" while hovering over an image. Clicking the I will display the URL or anchor text of the source field in an overlay (like you see in the image on the left).

Hubbers will not have to make any changes to image sources you have entered previously; this update will be automatic and we will take care of everything. Check out Paul Edmondson's forum post for the full details.

Pro Tips

Make sure your photos are legal to use and that you give proper credit.

A Reminder about Legal Image Use

Since we're on the subject of images, you can also reduce the potential that penalties are affecting your own Hubs by double checking that your images are all legal to use and properly cited, if a citation is required.

Remember, most photos on the internet are not free to use however you like. You need to make sure that the photos you find on the internet are in the public domain, under a Creative Commons license that allows commercial use of images (since you make money from your Hubs, your use of images on HubPages is considered commercial), or that the photographer has granted permission to use them.

Also remember that many Creative Commons images have specific attribution requirements. You may, for example, have to use the photographer's name alongside the image or clearly display the type of license, etc. Be sure that you follow these requirements or your use of the image may be a copyright violation even though it is a Creative Commons image.

Of course, your own photos are always best. On top of being totally 100% legal in all circumstances, they also demonstrate personal experience and authority. :)

If, however, you don't have a suitable photo of your own, you may want to check out this great list of 53+ sources of free images for Hubbing and blogging.
