Maven Is Now the Arena Group

Maven—HubPages' parent company and the home of Sports Illustrated and TheStreet—has rebranded as The Arena Group. But what does this mean?

According to a new article on Business Wire, "This new identity celebrates the company’s efforts over the past year to focus its core business strategy—building scalable media verticals, dubbed “arenas,” on a dynamic single technical platform, around passionate consumer interests. The reimagined identity was designed to capture the company’s unique value within the industry: a media ecosystem that brings together consumers, brands, publishers, storytellers, and advertisers around robust digital destinations."

So, what does this change mean for HubPages and its authors?

While this branding change is significant, it won't affect the way you create and publish articles. All of our networks sites are still live and have not undergone any rebranding. PetHelpful is still PetHelpful, Dengarden is still Dengarden, and so on. You'll still compose your articles using the HubTool, and they will still be curated and edited by our staff and moved to our network sites when appropriate.

What is changing, however, is that all of the properties under The Arena Group (formerly Maven) umbrella, now fall into one of three major "arenas"—sports, finance, and lifestyle. HubPages and most of its network sites exist within the lifestyle arena. ToughNickel and HowTheyPlay, however, now fall into the finance and sports arenas, respectively.

Pro Tips

"For Example" vs. "That Is"

The abbreviations e.g. and i.e. are commonly used interchangeably, but they have completely different meanings. The abbreviation e.g. stands for the Latin exempli gratia, which means "for example." The abbreviation i.e. stands for the the Latin id est, which means "that is." In your writing, be sure to choose the correct abbreviation for the situation.

If your aim is to provide examples of a concept or category, use e.g. to mean "for example." If your aim is to further elucidate the meaning of something you've just mentioned, choose i.e. to mean "that is" or "in other words."

Here are a few examples:

  • Newts are amphibious (i.e., they can absorb oxygen from both air and water).
  • Almost any original document (e.g., a handwritten note, a pamphlet, a photograph, etc.) can qualify as a primary source.
  • Horsepower (i.e., force times distance over time) is a common unit of power used when discussing cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles.
  • There are a number of academic disciplines that involve both qualitative and quantitative research (e.g., sociology, anthropology, psychology, etc.)

Pro tip: In American-style English, both e.g. and i.e. should always be followed by a comma. In British-style English, this comma is typically omitted.
