What is YMYL Content?

Happy 2022! We hope you had a relaxing holiday season and took some time off to enjoy the break. With that being said, it's time to dive back into writing original and knowledgeable content here on HubPages!

Have you ever heard of YMYL articles?

YMYL stands for "Your Money, Your Life" because this type of article can impact an individual's physical health, finances, and safety. While these articles can be beneficial to readers, it's crucial that you are qualified to give this advice and provide evidence that your information is factually correct.

Common YMYL topics include:

  • Shopping and finance (online eCommerce, banking websites)
  • Financial information (investments, taxes, financial planning, insurance)
  • Medical information (advice/information related to health, drugs, disease, and nutrition)
  • Legal information (citizenship, divorce, etc.)
  • Misc. (car safety, adoption processes, etc.)

YMYL content should demonstrate a high level of E-A-T:

  • Expertise: You have a degree, credentials, or are licensed in the appropriate field. Completing coursework or research on the topic is also acceptable!
  • Authoritativeness: You use professional language and exercise depth of knowledge about the topic. Technical and professional skills could also show authority.
  • Trustworthiness: This is mainly demonstrated by having first-hand experience or citing sources.

Now you might be asking, what happens if I omit E-A-T in my YMYL articles? The short answer is, your articles won't reach as many readers because Google heavily monitors YMYL articles. Without diving too hard into the inner workings of Google's algorithms, Google wants to provide valuable and accurate information to its readers; therefore, it won't promote content that doesn't follow the E-A-T guidlines.

Play on the safe side and do your research on YMYL topics, and include as much credible information as possible to drive traffic to your article!

Using Credible and Reliable Sources

Sources will be your best friend when it comes to writing YMYL articles! However, finding credible and reliable sources can be challenging will all of the information readily available on the internet.

Follow these four tips for finding credible sources for your YMYL articles:

  1. Be skeptical! Just because something is presented as a fact doesn't mean it is true. Question everything you read to be safe!
  2. Examine the author's credentials and affiliations.
  3. Make sure the source is up to date.
  4. Check and make sure the publisher of the source is reputable.

Websites that we highly recommend using for collecting sources are Google Scholar, Healthline, NPR Science, Gilder Lehrman History, and World Bank Open Data

Once you locate reliable sources, simply link them to the text in your article! You can even include a sources text capsule at the end and list all of your used sources.

Happy citing!
