Must-Know Words for the Winter Olympics

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are underway!

Between figure skating, skiing, hockey, and curling, there is something for everyone to enjoy! However, if you aren't personally involved in winter sports, you might be confused by some event terminologies, but don't worry! We've compiled a list of commonly unknown vocabulary words. Take a look for yourself!

Must-Know Words for the Winter Olympics:

  • Olympic Games: An ancient Panhellenic festival held every fourth year and made up of contests of sports, music, and literature with the victor's prize a crown of wild olives
  • Luge: A small sled that is ridden in a supine position and used especially in competition
  • Skeleton: A small sled that is ridden in a prone position and used especially in competition
  • Bobsled: A large usually metal sled used in racing and equipped with two pairs of runners in tandem, a long seat for two or more people, a steering wheel, and a hand brake
  • Axel: A jump in figure-skating from the outer forward edge of one skate with a 1 1/2 turns taken in the air and a return to the outer backward edge of the other skate
  • Lutz: A backward figure-skating jump with a takeoff from the outside edge of one skate followed by a full turn in the air and a landing on the outside edge of the other skate
  • Salchow: A figure-skating jump with a takeoff from the back inside edge of one skate followed by one or more full turns in the air and a landing on the back outside edge of the opposite skate
  • Hat Trick: The scoring of three goals in one game of hockey by a single player
  • Slalom: Skiing in a zigzag or wavy course between upright obstacles such as flags
  • Ollie: A maneuver in snowboarding in which the rider transfers weight from the front to the back foot to snap the board up off the ground
  • Curling: A game in which two teams of four players each slide curling stones over a stretch of ice toward a target circle.

How to Create and Use Grammarly:

  1. Create a Grammarly account here!
  2. After creating your account, Grammarly will install itself into your internet browsers and pop up when you write in Grammarly docs, Word, Google Docs, HubPages, etc.
  3. Suggestions and errors will pop up in a green G icon box located in the bottom right of the document.
  4. Simply click on the icon and identify what Grammarly tells you to correct. 
  5. Review the changes and either accept or deny them.

While it's important to note that Grammarly still makes mistakes, it is a valuable platform to utilize when writing articles for HubPages and network sites.
