Have you ever wondered about what books people worldwide are reading?

With so many options out there, it's a toss-up if people stick with the classics or venture towards newer authors. With that being said, we thought it would be interesting to look at the 10 best-selling books of all time.

Some you may have heard of, others not so much. Some books are historical classics, and some are relatively new. Some could surprise you, while others are a no-brainer. 

The 10 best-selling books of all time:

  1. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens: Published in 1859, this classic historical fiction novel has sold approximately 200 million copies. There's a strong possibility you had to read this or sections of it for high school English!
  2. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien: First published in 1937, this award-winning fantasy novel has sold over 140.6 million copies. Who doesn't love this classic quest fantasy book?
  3. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling: Published in 1997, this is the first book of the Harry Potter series and has sold a staggering 120 million copies. In the United States, the title was switched to the Sorcerers Stone. Fun fact, the Harry Potter series is the all-time best-selling series ever. 
  4. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery: This novella was published in 1943 and has sold 100 million copies. While this book is commonly thought of as a children's book, universal human truths are found within its pages. 
  5. Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin: Originally published in the 18th century, this book is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. No wonder it has sold over 100 million copies. 
  6. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie: This mystery novel was published in 1939 and went on to sell over 100 million copies. It is also the world's best-selling mystery of all time. 
  7. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis: First published in 1950, this book has sold over 85 million copies and is the first and best known of the seven novels in The Chronicles of Narnia. In 2005 it was adapted to the big screen by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media. 
  8. She: A History of Adventure by H.Rider Haggard: This fantasy and adventure novel was published in 1887 and has sold 83 million copies. Its representation of womanhood has received both praise and criticism. 
  9. The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi: This classic childhood tail was published in 1881. It has since sold over 80 million copies. There have been several film adaptations of this popular book, and another film is planned for 2022. 
  10. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown: This famous mystery thriller was published in 2003 and has sold 80 million copies. It has been translated into 44 different languages and was turned into a film in 2006 starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou.
