How to Update Your Articles to Sustain or Increase Traffic

We're back again this week with more high-quality tips on how to improve your articles and traffic!

Whether you've noticed traffic faltering slightly on one of your articles, or you just like to stay ahead of the game by keeping your content as high-quality and up-to-date as possible, there are a few simple things you can do periodically to keep things looking and sounding good.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Replace Low-Quality Images: Are the images in your article too small or pixelated? Replace them with images that are at least 700 pixels wide. Using Canva is also a great idea to create free and quality graphics.
  • Reformat for Clarity: Is there any information in your article that could be better presented as a bulleted/numbered list or a table? Online readers love scannable, easy-to-understand content.
  • Keep It Evergreen: Is your article totally up to date? Does it include any facts or figures that may have changed over the months or years? If so, do your best to update it.
  • Get Ideas From the Comments Section: Have you gotten comments from readers looking for information related to your topic that isn't included in your article? Consider adding a new section with a searchable header to answer that question.
  • Replace Broken Video Links: Every now and then, videos that link to YouTube become disabled and won't play the original video. Check your video links regularly and update them if they appear broken.

Help give your article that extra push today!

The Difference Between Hyphens, En Dashes, and Em Dashes

Hyphens, en dashes, and em dashes look pretty similar, and it can be challenging to remember which one you are supposed to use in a given situation. Who knew there were so many types of dashes?

Lucky for you, here's a quick and handy guide that includes keyboard shortcuts.

  • Hyphens (-): Hyphens should be used with compound modifiers (e.g., lead-bearing ore, light-footed dancer), compound words (e.g., attorney-at-law, ex-wife), and in some other cases. They should not be used to express date or number ranges. To create a hyphen, just press the hyphen key on your keyboard.
  • En Dashes (–): En dashes should be used to express ranges (e.g., 10–20 donuts, April 19th–June 28th, etc.) To create an en dash on a Mac keyboard, press and hold the "Option" key and then press the hyphen key. To create an en dash on a Windows keyboard, press and hold the "Alt" key, type "0150," then release the "Alt" key.
  • Em Dashes (—): Em dashes should be used like parentheses to separate additional information from the bulk of a sentence (e.g., My neighbor—who just moved in last month—never picks up his newspapers). In other cases, they can also be used to follow lists or emphasize ideas (e.g., Lions, tigers, and bears—oh my!). To create an em dash on a Mac keyboard, press and hold the "Option" key, press and hold the "Shift" key, then press the hyphen key. To create an em dash on a Windows keyboard, press and hold the "Ctrl" key, press and hold the "Alt" key, then press the hyphen key.

Happy dash-ing!
