Spring Has Sprung

Spring and "springtime" refer to the season but also to the ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, and regrowth. It's lighter for longer, the weather is warmer, and flowers and plants are in full bloom.

During early spring, the axis of the Earth increases its tilt relative to the Sun, and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere then begins to warm up significantly, causing new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name.

While the air is undoubtedly filled with pollen, there is also magic! Get outside and enjoy the blooms and take a minute to bask in the sun to celebrate the end of winter!

Here are a few vocabulary words that capture the springtime enchantment:

  • Balmy: Warm, calm, and pleasant
  • Bloom: To produce flowers
  • Equinox: A day when day and night are the same length
  • Germinate: To being to grow
  • Hatch: To emerge from an egg, pupa, or chrysalis
  • May Day: May 1st celebrated as a springtime festival and in some countries as Labor Day
  • Maypole: A tall pole decorated with ribbons and flowers that forms a center for May Day sports and dances
  • Metamorphosis: A major change in the form or structure of some animals or insects that happens as the animal or insect becomes an adult
  • Pollen: The very fine, usually yellow dust that is produced by a plant and that is carried to other plants of the same kind, usually by wind or insects, so that the plants can produce seeds
  • Prune: To cut off the parts of a woody plant that are dead or not wanted
  • Sapling: A young tree
  • Slicker: A long, loose raincoat
  • Sprout: To produce new leaves, buds, etc.
  • Vernal: Of, relating to, or occurring in the spring

Exciting Editing Update!

As some of you may have noticed, we've been experimenting with sitewide editing for some time and have seen a boost in site traffic overall as a result.

Until recently, we had only worked on a handful of sites, but we are now expanding to our entire network. For those of you with many articles on a given network site, this means you will receive many emails from us while that site is undergoing editing.

Thank you for your patience!
