When and Why Should You Use Tables?

This week, we're back with more tips and tricks to get the most out of your articles. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or new to HubPages, there is always more to learn and things to perfect.

One thing that most articles could benefit from is a table! Luckily, we aren't dealing with excel since there is a table capsule in the HubTool. Not only do they look nice, but tables are beneficial to readers since they are organized and efficient at sharing information.

Don't believe us? Keep reading, and you'll be convinced!

Five Reasons to Use Tables

  1. Reduces empty space: You reduce the amount of white "empty" space on the page when you use a table instead of bullet points. When you reduce this space, you can pack more information into the screen, thus allowing readers to get more content per scroll.
  2. Tables make a paragraph-style list easier to read: If you're trying to write a long list in paragraph form with commas, it can confuse readers. As the list gets longer, the information gets harder to digest. Make a list earlier to understand by transforming it into a table, which is much more skimmable.
  3. Invites compare and contrast: You can make comparisons easier to understand with a table. Using a table for comparison makes it easier for the reader to learn and gives a nice visual.
  4. Makes two-part information easier to understand: When offering two (or more) pieces of information at once, tables are your best friend. For example, say you are writing about baby names with their meanings, tables can be a helpful way to present that information to the reader so they can parse each half of it more easily.
  5. Easily preview or summarize information: Tables work great for sneak peeks in certain types of articles, like lists of pros and cons. You can also use a table to recap important information in the article and/or present it more holistically.

How to Create a Table

Now that you know all the benefits of tables let's go over how to create them in the HubTool. It's actually super simple and takes no time at all.

How to Create a Table

  1. Open your article and click the "add content capsules" in the right-side toolbar.
  2. Find the "Supplementary" category and click "table." The table capsule will then appear at the bottom of the article.
  3. Click the edit option and from here, customize your table.
  4. The top row of the table is a bolded header row. If you do not want a header row, then leave the top row blank!
  5. Add as many rows and columns as you'd like.
  6. When you're happy with the table, simply hit the save button in the top right corner of the capsule.

There you have it; your table is all good and ready to go!
