New Canva Feature: Text to Image

Canva.com has recently released a new feature that allows users to create images using artificial intelligence (that's right... robots!). This free tool is great for when you want to include a specific image in an article, but your search through creative commons sites has left you empty-handed.

To make an AI-generated image, go to Canva.com, open a blank project (remember, HubPages’s preference for images is 1400x1400 pixels), and look on the left side toolbar for the “Apps” button. Click on the Text to Image tool and type in a description of what you’d like to create. This description can be of anything you can imagine, but it helps when you are as detailed as possible. You can even choose the style in which the image is created, as the program offers photos, drawings, paintings, and more!

Also keep in mind that this software is fairly new and is still being developed. Our editors have found that the program is not very good at generating images related to people–especially faces and hands. Occasionally, the results can look unnatural and kind of strange, so be cautious! We’ve learned it is best at creating patterns (like “holly leaves”) or more abstract, artistic images (like “colorful brushstrokes on a white background”).

If you decide to include AI-generated images in your articles, you can attribute them by writing “Image created by (Author Name) using Canva’s AI technology” in the “Image Source” section of your photo capsule. Additionally, you must include “canva.com” in the “Image URL” section. This helps your readers know that the photo you included was made by AI and didn’t exist until you initiated its creation.

More Image Attribution Tips

When including images in articles, it is important to credit the original source, whether the image is your own, you found it on a creative commons site, or you used the new AI feature described above! Here are two examples of how to properly attribute images to their sources.

Example One–Wikimedia

  • Image author: Connor Long
  • Image source with image license: Wikimedia Commons (CC-BY-SA-3.0)
  • Image URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Taricha_torosa,_Napa_County,_CA.jpg

Example Two–Unsplash

  • Image author: Rodion Kutsaiev
  • Image source with image license: Unsplash.com
  • Image URL: https://unsplash.com/photos/ySNkCkdKyTY
