What to Celebrate During Pride 2023?

Achievements for LGBTQ+ People in the Previous Year

Every June, millions around the world participate in Pride Month festivities which often include street fairs, parades, concerts, festivals, and other events honoring those who've paved the way for more widespread acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals.

On June 28th, 1969, police raided the gay bar Stonewall Inn in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood, leading to protests and riots between police and patrons. Described as a watershed moment in the gay liberation movement, Pride celebrations have been held every year since in honor of what the protests did for the community at large.

Though the LGBTQ+ community still faces ongoing threats some 50 years after Stonewall, the last year has also seen positive changes for the community worldwide. Let's recap achievements from the last year or so.

  • In October 2022, the Mexican state of Tamaulipas legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the 31st and final Mexican state to do so. Though the Mexican Supreme Court ruled back in 2010 that same-sex marriage performed within the country had to be recognized everywhere, Tamaulipas was the final state to amend its Civil Code.
  • In September 2022, a strong majority of voters in Cuba legalized same-sex marriage; it came a few years after leader Miguel Díaz-Canel voiced support for marriage equality.
  • In March 2022, Chilean President Gabriel Boric signed a bill into law legalizing same-sex marriage.
  • On July 1, 2022, same-sex marriage became legal in Switzerland after a referendum voted on back in 2020 took effect. Registered partnerships within the country have afforded couples most of the rights and benefits of marriage since 2007.
  • Last November, Singapore decriminalized homosexual activity and now does not allow censorship of LGBTQ+ issues in media.
  • Last year, Spain, Paraguay, Vietnam, Greece, New Zealand, Israel, France (and its territories), and Canada outlawed conversion therapy.
  • Last year, Cuba, Slovenia, and Croatia began allowing same-sex couples to adopt.

Pride month is always held in celebration of those who have come out and begun to live more authentically. Events are held to honor figures who are trailblazers in their respective fields and in appreciation of all those working outside the spotlight to promote LGBTQ+ issues. Happy Pride from HubPages!

Effective Callout Capsules

Callout capsules are an excellent feature to enhance articles on HubPages as they allow for sharing quotes, fun facts, or additional information that might be slightly tangential. Since they are designed to make the words stand out, it is important they be used correctly and effectively.

Here are some tips:

  • If you are quoting someone, use the quote format that can be found under "Callout Type." Doing this will give you a specific field where you can attribute the quote in a way that looks cleaner than doing the formatting on your own.
  • Don't use callout capsules for headers. Though it might look decent while building the article, once it is rendered, there's a high chance the callout/header will be separated from the text. It quickly becomes confusing.
  • Think of information that might not be in the article but is helpful for context. For example, in an article about buildings in Budapest, it might be helpful to include a callout capsule briefly detailing the difference and history of Buda and Pest. Even if it's not essential for readers to understand, it's still helpful and can make an article even more interesting.
  • Use callouts as gentle reminders. Instead of making them into disclaimers, which are often on articles anyways, you can use a callout to highlight that, though the article gives advice or information, speaking to someone else might be best. For example, if you have an article about guided tours in Europe that was published before 2020, you might go in and add a callout saying something along the lines of, "Please make sure you call or email tour groups before showing up in Europe. These were all in operation as of 2019, but logistics may have changed due to widespread disruption to the tourism industry beginning in 2020."
