Formula One in Canada

The 2023 Canadian Grand Prix

Formula One (F1) will return to Canada this weekend at the Gilles Villeneuve racing circuit in Montreal, Quebec! The race will be held on Sunday, June 18, and between Friday and Saturday, three free practice (FP) sessions and a qualifying round will take place. Montreal marks the eighth F1 race this year and follows Barcelona's two weekends ago.

But are you new to the world of F1 racing and struggling to understand what all the hype is about? In brief summation, F1 is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater (or formula) cars. Formula also refers to a set of rules which all cars in competition must follow. There are ten teams with two drivers for each, meaning that though there are over 20 races in a year, the same drivers are in each.

Points are accumulated by both team and driver throughout the year; at the end, the top three drivers are declared, and prize money is distributed. With sponsorships and endorsements taken into account, it's hard to tell exactly how much could be made throughout the year, but it is a lot of money, nevertheless. Dutch-Belgian driver Max Verstappen is the reigning champion from both the 2021 and 2022 seasons and is currently in the lead for this year as well, with 170 points; Mexico's Sergio Pérez is currently in second with 117.

If you are interested in learning more about F1, check out Savio Koman's piece on the Top 8 Fastest Formula 1 Pitstops (don't worry, pitstops are defined if you're not familiar), or S K's piece Racing Videos: Formula 1 Car vs. Road Car vs. Boat vs. Jet, which shows just how impressive the cars are versus other vehicles, boats, and even jets.

If you heard about the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which was supposed to be held the weekend of May 21st, being canceled due to floods in the region, you might be wondering about the effects of wildfires impacting eastern Canada. Officials have already announced that the fires and ensuring smoke and air quality should not affect attendees or drivers. Fortunately, the race should be able to continue as usual!

Grammarly

We've discussed Grammarly in our newsletter before, but the tool can be so handy when it comes to editing we figured we'd talk about it again! So, let's recap!

Grammarly is a typing/writing assistant that can be installed on your computer and will check your text when using programs like Word and Pages or when writing on the internet (like here on HubPages). It uses AI to help figure out what you are trying to say and operates like a more robust version of spell check.

There is both a free and premium version of Grammarly. Both versions check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as tone and conciseness. The paid version can check for much more, like word and sentence variety, instances of plagiarism, and inclusive language.

Here are some other things you should note if using the tool:

  • You can switch between American, British, Canadian, Australian, and Indian English. Though all these countries use English, historical and geographic differences have led to numerous discrepancies in spelling (think color vs. colour), grammar (the use of the serial comma), and punctuation (like if the period goes in or outside a quotation mark). Being able to switch between dialects will help you maintain a standardized form of writing.
  • If Grammarly's suggestions are starting to interfere with your writing, you can easily turn the program off for a period of time, and it will automatically turn back on. It's much simpler to do this than disabling or uninstalling the program.
  • Though the program is helpful, you should also not depend on it 100%. There are some instances when it makes mistakes or where your unique voice is diminished through Grammarly's attempts to be concise. Sometimes it takes saving and closing your work and reopening it for the program to catch its own mistake; other times, Grammarly will just keep making it. Having another set of eyes look your work over or reading it aloud is still sometimes more effective than the program!
