What happened on this day in history?
Have you ever wondered which famous people were born on the same day as you? Or if any famous historical events happened the day you were born? Well, there are plenty of sites that tabulate this type of information if you are interested.
Websites to check include
Famous Birthdays, where the homepage changes by the day to show which famous people were born. The lists are very detailed and include everyone from actors and singers to famous YouTubers.

This Day In History on history.com, where you can type in any day of the year and get plenty of information on events that happened around the world. The information is both detailed and digestible.
If you are an iPhone user, you can also download the
Wikipedia app and add the widget to your home screen, where they will display a timeline and brief descriptions under the header "On this day." On June 21st alone, there are 44 historical events listed stretching from year 533 up to 2012!

So, what happened this week?
- June 19: As of 2021, June 19, or Juneteenth, is now a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the day the final slaves (some 250 thousand) were emancipated in Texas. It came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, which gave roughly 3.5 million Black people freedom from enslavement.
- June 20: In 1975, Steven Spielberg's Jaws was released to massive box office success in the United States and internationally. It changed the American film industry's approach to and the concept of summer blockbusters.
- June 21: In 1779, Spain declared war on Great Britain and, by default, created an alliance with the Americans. Spain wanted Gibraltar back from Great Britain and to have Spanish borders in North America. The new war resulted in Great Britain's resources becoming stretched even thinner as France was also on the side of the Americans.
- June 22: In 1898, German author Erich Maria Remarque was born in Osnabruck, Germany; he would go on to write the acclaimed novel All Quiet on the Western Front, praised for its realism and detailed writing about the physical traumas of war. Several films have been made based on the book.
- June 23: Back in 1929, June Carter Cash, a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, member of the Carter Family musical group, and second wife to Johnny Cash, was born in Maces Spring, Virginia. She died in 2003.
