FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

What to know about the women's football championship?

Last week, the ninth edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup kicked off! The football (or soccer, if you're from the United States) competition is being jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand at ten venues across nine cities. Last year, Argentina took home the championship in the thrilling men's edition of the World Cup, which was held in Qatar.

This year's competition is the first time that two countries have jointly hosted the games, and it began with a match between New Zealand and Norway on July 20, which New Zealand won. It is also the first time two regions have hosted the games: Australia is in the Asian confederation, while New Zealand is in the Oceanian confederation.

The entire competition is set to conclude on August 20th at the Sydney Olympic Stadium.

So what else do you need to know about the competition?

  • The United States are the defending champions, having won the last two titles in 2019 and 2015.
  • This year's competition features an expanded format with 32 teams participating, as opposed to 24 in previous installments. Since there were so many more slots to fill, several countries have qualified for the first time. Those making their debut include the Philippines, Vietnam, Morroco, Zambia, Portugal, Ireland, Haiti, and Panama
  • The countries are divided into eight groups where they will compete against one another until the first full day of rest on August 3. Two to four games will be played each day across all groups.
  • From there, the top 16 will compete, which is then followed by the quarter and semi-finals. Third place will be determined in a match on August 19, and the winner will be crowned on August 20.

If you are interested in learning more about the world cup, you should check out the articles  The Top 10 Best Football (Soccer) Teams of All Time and  The Top 10 Best Goals Scored in World Football on our sports site  HowTheyPlay. That said, these focus on the men's teams, so if you're feeling like writing something about the outstanding female players and teams, it looks as though you've stumbled across an untapped subject!

Enjoy the games!

What Is HubPages Help?

Have you heard of HubPages Help? If not, check the site out, and the chances you'll find an answer to one of your questions are pretty high!

On HubPages Help, several articles cover topics like How to Create Content That Lasts or How to Sign Up for the Earnings Program. You can also locate our writing style guide and our recipe-specific style guide. There is advice on how to craft a title that is both competitive with similar content and search-friendly and what you should do if you see a warning on one of your pieces (though we generally don't recommend worrying too much if this happens—phew!).

The editing team encourages you to check these articles out if you have never visited the site before or if you're just getting started writing with HubPages. Because the internet is competitive and an ever-changing and evolving space, it's worth making sure you know exactly what kind of content works on our network sites and which does not.

As we always recommend, make sure your writing is evergreen (meaning it's relevant 24/7), based on experience, factually sound, well-written, and has good media. These factors are sure to make your pieces look good to Google and other search engines as well as to readers.

Remember, if you ever have questions or want to hear other authors' opinions, you can post in the forums, and if you have questions about edits completed by our editing team, you can always respond to the email that is sent out notifying you of changes that were made.
