The United Nation's World Peace Day

Promoting Worldwide Peace

September 21, 2023, marks the 42nd year the United Nations has held its International Day of Peace, aimed at just that—promoting peace in all corners of the globe and working together to foster agreements and cooperation based on the absence of war and violence.

The theme for 2023 is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals, which might sound a little vague at first but has good intentions. This year, the UN is using the day to highlight the need for a collective, worldwide effort to reach their  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the target year 2030.

The goals are broad and ambitious, though it's indisputable that the world would indeed be more peaceful if they were achieved. They involve tackling persistent issues like gender and education inequality, developing sustainable communities and cities, generating affordable and clean energy, and promoting responsible consumption and production.

The UN also encourages countries to participate in cease-fire and non-violence for at least the day.

The HubPages editing team would like to highlight a few articles from authors across our sites that share the same sentiments on peace and prosperity that the UN hopes to promote with the commemorative day. Give them a read!

Overcoming Writer's Block

Writer's block is something that many of you likely already know about. As writers, dealing with being unable to come up with your next idea or plot point can be frustrating, and that's just putting it mildly. In many ways, it can feel like you are never going to be able to write again.

Sometimes, it comes down to time, and you just have to work through the frustration, but there are a few other ideas for dealing with such an irritating mindblock.

Here are some techniques to help quell the issue:

  1. Make Writing a Habit: It's true that the more you write, the better you become. As authors, you can probably say this is true based on your own experience. Therefore, prioritizing making writing part of your routine will help keep your mind fresh with new ideas.
  2. Take Breaks: Though writing frequently is important, you should also not spend all day hunched over trying to compose. Take breaks and go do something active or otherwise unrelated to your project. When you come back, you'll be more likely to notice mistakes or have ideas you wouldn't have thought of before.
  3. Work Somewhere Else: Writing while always sitting in the same chair can become boring and monotonous, even if you're writing the most thrilling text you've ever composed. Try taking a day to go to a park or coffee shop to write, or take a weekend getaway and prioritize productivity there.
  4. Read: By reading work from authors that you admire or authors whose work you really do not enjoy, you will learn what you like and don't like. With that information, you can figure out what tropes or elements you want in your own work.
