Google's September Algorithm Update

What changes has the search engine made?

Google—which turns 25 today!—announced a new algorithm update earlier this month and is currently in the final days of rolling it out. The HubPages editing team figured it would be beneficial to point out some of the changes to all of our writers.

As with every Google update, it is important to read through what's new and see what can be done to make articles align more closely with what the search engine now prioritizes. This update is focused on helpful content and seeks to find information that genuinely aids readers as opposed to finding things created only to appear high in search results.

Here are a few articles to read for a more in-depth look at the changes:

In short, here's what you need to know:

  • Global: This update affects content across the entire globe and in any language and applies to both Google Search and Google Discover.
  • Helpfulness: If your piece is offering readers advice, make sure it does so thoroughly. If you need images or videos to effectively get your point across or to help illustrate a step-by-step guide, make sure they are all featured in the article, captioned, and of high quality.
  • Expertise: This is something we've always emphasized at HubPages, but it appears Google now wants it more than ever. Ensure your expertise and experience on the topics you write about are evident in both the content of the article and your profile bios.
  • Worthwhile changes: Instead of going in and altering sentence structure or making other small changes, it is recommended that you take the time to make more comprehensive updates that boost the article's overall E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) score. This could mean expanding on certain topics, adding further sources, filling out photo captions, etc.

Pro Tips

Creating the Best Top Images

A few months ago, we announced a change to standards for our top images. Previously, images with text overlay were deemed beneficial for sharing on social media sites like Pinterest. However, now we prefer top images that are landscape orientation, high quality, and without any text overlay; it has helped cultivate a much more consistent look across our sites.

Here are some reminders and tips on the top of creating the best top images.

  • Network site homepages and search results show the article title and the top image in a landscape thumbnail. If your top image within the article is not the same orientation as other articles or has text, it could become awkwardly cropped and look less than ideal.
  • The HubPages editing team uses a template with a 16:9 orientation to create the top image. Additionally, it has a 2,000 x 1,125-pixel quality. Top images don't have to be exactly within these measurements, but the closer, the better.
  • Images that are .jpg load faster than .png images, and the quality difference between the two formats is minimal for our sites. Additionally, .jpg loads faster!
  • If you find an image in the public domain that you'd like to use, but it is the wrong orientation, we suggest using a simple crop tool or online editing program like Canva, where you can make adjustments and simply re-download the photo.

Remember, if you have images with text overlay that you wish to keep in your article, you can do that! Just bump it down a little further into the piece or put it right at the end. That way, you can still use it for Pinterest and show off your graphic design skills to readers.
