Creating Content That Helps the Reader

What designates something as "helpful"?

We often talk about EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) when it comes to the kind of content we look for for our HubPages network sites. A shorter way of saying this could be just helpful content. Helpful content is something that Google wants just as much as we want to provide our readers. 

@searchliaison on X (formerly Twitter) is an account dedicated to giving updates and insight on how Google Search works. They recently responded to someone about their recent update (check our newsletter archives for further information) and their new approach to blogging and helpful content. We figured our writers would benefit from hearing about what they had to say on the topic.

Here's what they recently shared:

  • They noted that personal content and blogging have been and still are okay forms of content to publish, even if it is just giving a personal update. Write about anything you wish to, as the specific type/topic of content will not come off as low-quality to Google. The problems begin when the content is strictly for search engine ranking and not written for human audiences. 
  • It's also important to know that writing with good SEO practices helps search engines find the content, but that doesn't mean the content should only be written for SEO. This might sound like a hard distinction to make, but basically, write what you want to inform your audience on and then optimize it for SEO afterward. (Example: Write about the best cat litter available based on your personal experience trying different kinds and not because you think "best cat litter" is a popular search term.)
  • Tools like Google Search Counsel can help you optimize the content once it has been published by seeing what terms and phrases are bringing your article up for readers. You can and should adjust based on what is working, but overhauling an article strictly based on search counsel data is not the best idea, especially if that means it loses its personal touch. 

Google Search Central is a good place to look at what the search engine looks for in depth. Finding a Niche Angle for Articles

In the same vein as creating helpful content, it is important to find niche angles within the topic you are writing about. Since there is so much content across the internet, it might seem impossible to be totally unique, but any level of it helps.

Here are some other ways to come up with a niche angle for your article:

 

If you want to review your trip to Paris, perhaps don't tell your audience just what you thought of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. There are so many articles across HubPages' WanderWisdom, other travel sites, and even YouTube videos that you will be in competition with. They're famous landmarks, and everyone who's experienced them has an opinion of them. Instead, you should spend some time doing a search and see what comes up for subtopics like "best lesser-known pieces of art in the Louvre" or "art museums and galleries to go to in Paris that aren't the Louvre."

With a city as prominent as Paris, even niche topics might feel saturated, but remember that things like personal photos, strong and informed writing, and personal opinions will help your piece stand out from the masses. 

If you recently renovated part of your home that required a few extra steps for problems you didn't anticipate—let's say you began painting a staircase and realized there were a few rotten stairs—it might be a good idea to discuss both your initial project and how you worked around the issue. That will give the piece a personal angle and will help distinguish it from the majority of other articles that just broadly cover painting a staircase. 

When coming up with your article, make sure you know why you are writing it. Did you just become interested in the subject? Did another form of media inspire you? Did you react to something in a way that you feel like others generally don't? All these questions can help you make your piece unique.
