What's Happening in November?
Books, Sports, and Political Moments to Watch For
Welcome, November!
With Halloween behind us and the time change coming this weekend, the fall season is officially in full swing. Here's what else is coming up that might pique your interest!
- Today marks the first day of National American Indian Heritage Month in the United States, which has been celebrated every November since 1990. Other holidays this month include Veterans Day on November 11 and Thanksgiving on November 23.
- There are always hundreds of new books being published every month, but with the holidays approaching, you might have some more time to consume the ones on your lists. Two celebrity memoirs that have been highly anticipated—Britney Spears' The Woman in Me, out last Friday, and Barbra Streisand's nearly 1,000-page My Name is Barbra, out next week—are two of the most talked about of the fall season. Here are
Time Magazine's picks for what you should read in November.
- Major League Baseball's 2023 World Series wraps up (at the latest) this Saturday between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks. Game 5 is today, and if the Rangers secure another win—that concludes the season!
- Next Tuesday is Election Day in the United States, and though there aren't any races being held at the national level, there are dozens of state and local elections worth watching (and participating in!).
- NFL in Germany?! Over the next two weeks, two American football games will be held in Frankfurt. The Kansas City Cheifs will take on the Miami Dolphins this Sunday, while the New England Patriots play the Indianapolis Colts on November 12.
Here's to a cozy and comfortable November!

Practicing Comma Usage
Commas are something it feels like every writer struggles with. Even if you are a grammar expert, there are probably times when it seems as though you are spending as much time adjusting comma placement as you did brainstorming and writing. That's why it's always helpful to have a reminder on best comma usage.
- One of the best ways to get your comma placement correct is to read your work out loud. When you feel like there is a natural pause, try putting one in. If it gets excessive, you'll start to notice, or maybe even your spelling and grammar checker will point it out!
- You can also have someone read over your work; if you don't have someone, know that the HubPages editing team will do so!
- The serial or Oxford comma is something that is used depending on whether you use British or American English, and sometimes even depends on the publication. Using it tends to help avoid confusion, but the most important thing is to either consistently use it or to consistently not use it!
- Unless you are writing a location name that has a period or another form of punctuation immediately following, it's best to use a comma after the name. (Ex: We'll be staying in London, England, this summer while taking day or weekend trips throughout other parts of Europe.)
- If you find that you have so many commas in a sentence that it starts to become confusing whether you've overused them, try breaking the sentence up. Though being able to construct a complex and detailed sentence with commas is impressive, if you lose the reader (or worse, yourself!), it's not to the benefit of anyone.
