National American Indian Heritage Month

What does the month commemorate and celebrate?

Major November holidays in the United States include Thanksgiving and Veterans Day, but did you know that since 1990, the entirety of November also celebrates National American Indian Heritage Month (also called Native American Heritage Month)?

The month is dedicated to celebrating the "traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities [and to] ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation," according to the Department of the Interior's website.

The month was founded after decades of efforts were made by various Native American leaders and groups. Prominent voices for the holiday included Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, who persuaded Boy Scouts of America to have a day commemorating the "First Americans," and Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe and president of the Congress of the American Indian Association, who called for an observance of American Indian Day all the way back in 1915.

The theme of 2023 is Celebrating Tribal Sovereignty and Identity, meaning that any decisions regarding Tribal property and citizens are made with both participation and consent.

We'd like to highlight some of the fascinating and well-researched articles put together by our HubPages writers about Native American history, identity, and customs. Check them out below:

Addressing Author Edit Requests

Sometimes, when members of the HubPages editing team get an article that has the potential to be a great fit for a network site but needs some editing or certain issues fixed, they will send an author edit request. These are important to address if you wish to have your pieces featured.

Why are they sent?

Oftentimes, the editorial team will send an edit request when the changes needed are not feasible for the editors themselves to do. If you are writing about a trip you recently took and there are no photos you personally captured, an edit request might be sent asking to add some in.

Product capsules that do not have any personal endorsement might be another reason. If authors describe their reasons for liking a product, it will look much better to search engines and readers than if there is no accompanying text or something more generic from an editor.

Updates are another major reason edit requests might be sent. Statistics, hours of operation, and regulations around any number of topics change frequently. Many times, it's easier and more time-efficient for the author who did the research and sourcing in the first place to make the updates than the editors.

More Tips

If you get an edit request from the HubPages team, take a close look at the personal note and the bulleted points indicating necessary changes. If you are still confused about why your piece needs more work, check out other articles on the network site and HubPages Help to see how you can improve the piece.

Once you have made the edits, you can resubmit the piece to the network site and leave a note detailing what you changed for the editor!
