Happy Valentine's Day!

Fun Facts About the Holiday

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone in our HubPages community! Though the day is usually about love for your partner, who says the editing team can't express love and appreciation to our writers for their hard work? Your dedication to creating great articles makes HubPages what we are!

Here are some fun facts about the holiday:

  • It's estimated that consumers buy a whopping 58 million pounds of chocolate and candy for the holiday every year.
  • Lovebirds aren't just couples in love; they're real birds! And their more scientific name is Agapornis. If you want to learn more about these sweet creatures, start with  Lovebird Courtship and Mating on PetHelpful!
  • Galentine's Day, a celebration of female friendship and support, was popularized by Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation, and some might even consider her the day's patron saint! An addendum holiday to Valentine's, it is typically celebrated on the day or two preceding February 14 and is also filled with lots of pink!
  • The Feast of Saint Valentine was first celebrated on February 14, way back in the 8th century, but the day didn't start becoming associated with love until the 14th and 15th centuries. In 18th-century England, the notion of handing out handmade cards came around, giving way to the more mass-produced Valentine's Day content we now see.

When to Use a Table vs Plain Text

Tables are a great way to present content, particularly numbers, in an organized fashion, but they're not always the best formatting option. Sometimes, sticking with plain text or opting for a bulleted list is better.

Here are some general tips:

  • If you are comparing content and it would be helpful to see the numbers (or whatever it is you're comparing) next to each other, try a table.
  • If you're making a list that is getting so long your readers might feel like they're scrolling endlessly to reach the end, try making a table!
  • If you are defining a word or giving suggestions and a table might start creating more formatting work than is needed, stick to plain text. Try bolding the word and using a colon or dash to provide the definition.
  • If you create a table and no longer feel like it's needed (or vice versa), hide the capsule instead of deleting it. This will come in handy in case further edits to the article make the table or list relevant again.
