Do ferrets make good pets?

If you are considering getting a ferret as a pet instead of asking ‘should I get a ferret?’ you may wish to ask yourself ‘Do ferrets make good pets?’ The answer to this question depends very much on the individual. It depends on what kind of person you are and how much time you can give to care for a ferret. In my opinion ferrets do make excellent pets even though they do take a lot of looking after. I will now list 10 reasons why I think ferrets make excellent pets.

10 reasons why ferrets make good pets

Reason 1

The first reason that ferrets make good pets is that they are very playful and energetic animals. For me it is important to have a playful pet because how much fun could a person have watching a pet that barely moves? The more energetic the pet the more entertaining the pet, so ferrets are very entertaining animals.

Reason 2

The second reason is that ferrets are adorable looking animals and they come in a variety of different colours. Ferrets are fairly small animals but are big enough to pick up and stroke. I like ferrets because they share some amazing similarities to cats and I like cats a lot.

Reason 3

Ferrets become attached to their owners and enjoy interacting with their owners. They are very affectionate animals and with some training you could get yourself a loving little lap-ferret.

Reason 4

Ferrets are very quiet animals. Ferrets do not make many vocal noises so they very good pets for people who live in apartments or flats as they are unlikely to annoy neighbours with loud noises during the night.

Reason 5

Ferrets can be trained. Ferrets are almost as intelligent as cats and can be trained to use a litter tray, like a cat would. Ferrets can also be trained to do tricks, like a dog. This can provide hours of entertainment for an owner and the ferret will enjoy performing tricks that you teach it because it will enjoy the praise and fuss it will get for doing a trick.

Reason 6

The fact that ferrets are not very big means that providing them with a comfortable cage is no big expense. Ferret cages do not have to be massive monstrosities that take up a load of space in your house. A ferret cage has to be fairly big so that the ferret has room to move around but they really do not tend to take up a lot of space.

Reason 7

Feeding your ferret is very easy and fairly cheap. Ferrets are very energetic animals when they are awake so they require food that will give them energy. Food that is full of protein but low in fat is a must. Ferrets spend a lot of time sleeping so you must avoid food that is high in fat and high in carbohydrates because the carbohydrates will be absorbed by the ferret body and turned into fat while the ferret is inactive. A high protein diet means that while the ferret is awake the protein gets burned off quickly because of the energetic nature of the ferret.

Reason 8

As I said before ferrets are very entertaining animals and this is because they are extremely curious about their environment. They love to explore and find places to crawl under or high places to jump from. There are loads of funny ferret videos on YouTube so let your ferret loose and have a camera at the ready then maybe you ferret friend will become an internet star.

Reason 9

Ferrets can be taken for a walk in a way similar to that of a dog. Ferrets used to be used as hunting companions many years ago just like dogs. Ferret harnesses were developed to stop the ferrets from getting lost due to their poor eyesight. If you strap your ferret into a ferret harness you can get your ferret a lot of fresh air and some well deserved exercise.

Reason 10

Ferrets, unlike a lot of cats and dogs, enjoy being bathed. Ferrets are not afraid of water and usually enjoy being bathed. They splash about in the water and once they are clean they love to be towel dried, I think it may be to do with the fact that the rough surface of the towel reminds them of their mothers tongue from their childhood.

As you can see from these 10 reasons ferrets do make very good pets. Like all other pets ferrets do need to be treated properly and cared for properly. Before rushing off to buy or adopt a ferret look on the internet for more information about ferrets so that you can make a well informed decision about whether to get a ferret or not!
