One good way to get rid of them is by using a rat zapper. It lures the rat or mouse into a small chamber where an electrical charge will zap the rodent. A light on the top of the rat zapper will blink to let you know when it's time to empty it.
Both the FIX THAT RAT and rat zapper will kill via electrocution.
The FIX THAT RAT i know will give you some 40 kills with one set of 4 AA batteries
