How much insulin for a diabetic dog.
My large dog was diagnosed with diabetes 2 weeks ago. He gets 2 shots of 15 units each right after he eats at 7a.m. and 7p.m. The vet just raised his shots to 20 units because his blood glucose was still at 25-30 even with the 15 units. Should my dog be getting a snack? Should we wait 2 weeks before raising the insulin? How much is too much of one kind of insulin? Should we be trying a different kind of insulin instaed of raising the caninsulin? Please help. It breaks my heart to see him so sick.
I had a similar situation and after 3 month applying these "little" adjustments Bella was no diabetic any more.
It is no straight forward answer. Read a bit about diabetes and what is happening in the blood before meal, after meal. your understanding can save the dog. The dog sugar metabolism is very similar with ours.
Be very observant with what, when and how the dog react to everything eat or happen around him.
Eating small portion and as a snaky style, not being distress helps.
Look for more meaty food than dry pellets doggy type: too much carbohydrate in those sophisticated convenient food.

What are the ways by which you can reduce the level of insulin in the blood?Sometimes the insulin level in the blood stream is two or three times the normal level. This leads to many complications.
