Why are wet/dry or trickle filters considered to be "nitrate factories" by advanced aquarists?

These are filters used on reef and fish only with live rock aquariums.  Some people use them on freshwater aquariums as well.

Not a great idea to use fresh water filtration for your marine aquarium. They are all marine aquarium nightmares. A skimmer should be present at all times since you high senility water will produce oils and proteins that will not filter out properly through your freshwater filter circulating system.

Not to be a hypocrite I have designed several holding tanks that were never in any necessity of a skimmer. But thats another article.

My secret is religious water changes.

actually that has been proven wrong, a wet dry sump is the best thing to have for your marine aquarium. also you do not need to have a preteen skimmer present, i am running a 120 mined reef without a skimmer and it looks beautiful.
