    I remember reading somewhere that the hummingbird has an incredibly short life span.  Is that true?

    It's all relative, a mayfly, in its final form, lives about a day, some parrots and whales, and tortoises live many years longer than man.  I'm sure that hummingbirds, in general, live the life span Mother Nature allotted them.

    Although many hummingbirds die within the first year, they have been know to live up to 12 years. It is a misconception that because they have a very high metabolic rate while in flight that their lifespan is shorter.

    According to the San Francisco Zoo hummingbirds who survive the first year live from 6-12 years. Here is the link:
