Pretty darn fast! According to Wikipedia, Greyhounds can run up to 39 MPH!
I once chased a small pomeranian for a half hour. He ran fast enough to convince me that I am not more evolved than dogs. After I finally caught the dog... I started thinking about all the OTHER things animals have that humans don't have.
Scales or tough skin
sense of smell ............ and lots of other examples too.
That's one of the reasons I believe God created each creature as He wanted it. If we were "The most highly evolved", I think humans would look more like the Creature From the Black Lagoon.. as pictured here.
It's tought to say with there being so many breeds of dog out there. Because of that, experience is your best friend when it comes to guessing how much to lead them by. Just make sure to maintain consistency. If you prefer shotguns, stick with shotguns. If you prefer rifles, stick with rifles.
