Which animal used to roam in huge herds across the American west?
The American Buffalo used to roam in large herds all over the Western United States until they were hunted to extinction.
While it is the Bison, or North American Buffalo, they never were hunted to extinction. They were hunted to near-extinction, and were down to only several thousand animals at one time, but now the herds have made a fairly good comeback. In parts of Wyoming and Montana there are a very limited number of hunting licenses issued for them every year.
