I am getting a puppy saturday the 19th I want to train him for therapy
I dont know how to get started. If you are local to me, you be willing to help? I'm in lakehurst
I'm not local, but I can tell you that the therapy dog program in my area, as well as the one in the last place I lived, will not accept dogs under four years of age. They require dogs to not only be a bit mellower than a puppy, they also need the time to determine the dog's overall personality and level of aggression. That said, in getting started, if there is no one advertising in your area, ask around at your local hospital and/or nursing home and ask if they have therapy dogs that visit there. If so, they may know who to contact for training, or be able to ask people who have been through training with their dogs themselves.
Not all dogs are suitable for therapy work. He/she needs to be evaluated first by a REPUTABLE therapy trainer (not one that will tell you yes just to get your $). Included in eval should be which type of therapy dog "may" be acceptable for.
