How should I deal with it when my dog acts aggressively towards other dogs?
My dog is 2 years old and very sweet. She's twenty pounds, and has always been afraid of big dogs (and now any dogs that she doesn't know(, to the point where she will growl and snap her teeth to try to scare them away.
We socialized her as a puppy. I took her to group training classes, friends' houses, ect. and we go to the dog park at least once a week. They have a small dog side, so she's okay there. Any advice?
Take your dog to the veterinarian when you observe aggression toward other dogs. Signs of aggression include snarling, baring teeth, growling, snapping and biting. These behaviors might be caused by an underling health issue. If your dog is not yet spayed or neutered, now is the time to do it. Sometimes this can alleviate aggression toward other dogs. Seek assistance from a professional animal behaviorist if your dog gets a clean bill of health from the vet. Do not try to deal with your aggressive dog on your own.
I just read your hub on "Raising a Timid Dog" so I am not going to give you facile advice that you already know, like "take your dog to the veterinarian". Dealing with dog-dog aggression is always hard, but at least with a 20 pound dog it is easier to deal with.
Without meeting and evaluating your dog, it sounds like she is dealing with a confidence issue. By that, I mean she does not have enough confidence in you. She will probably always be timid but the response you want from her would be "run and hide behind mama", not "stick up for yourself and dont allow yourself to be bullied".
As far as advice. If you are following your hub you are doing almost everything possible. A lot of "experts" will tell you not to baby your dog, but if she were mine I would pick her up and remove her from any situation is which she feels threatened.
Dominance theory and pack leader/alpha dog theory is not vogue at the moment but you should also work on some leadership issues, like impulse control (waiting to accept food from you, waiting at the door, etc). At least that way she will see you as someone to look to in times of danger, or at least what she percieves as danger.
Keep trying! You guys have 10 or 15 more years together, so work on this now.

My dog bit me and drew blood - should I put it down?Today, the dog bit me. Hard. On the thumb, deep puncture wound and black and blue mark on the nail. I thoughtlessly took a big bone away from her without testing first how Jackie would react. Because it wasn't dog food that she gulped down in 3...

I've heard a lot of complaining about aggressive atheism as if it's a bad thing. Christianity and Islam can sure dish it out but they can't seem to take it, kind of like a street mugger calling the police when their victims fight back. Aggressive atheism is actually defensive atheism. Nothing is...

As some-one said to the question. "Is any-one else in the west fed up of america's war mongering?" that 'we're already in a third world war due to all the skirmishes that the major powers are involved in'. But does this constitute a world war, or a pre cursor to a world...
