I had an Aussie who lived to be 16, who suffered with increasing arthritis of her hind quarters and legs for the last 4 years of her life. One of the drugs we tried reduced her kidney function so we could not use it very long (a shame because it really helped her). We found a drug without those side effects but ultimately was unable to walk without falling, and the falls would cause her pain. I now have two border collies who have been equally active and as they age I'm trying to incorporate pet massage of their back legs to see if we can prevent some of what our Aussie suffered.
