National Hug Your Cat Day

If you are a lover of cats, today is a day you'll want to celebrate. May 30th is the official National Hug Your Cat Day! Don't stop there. Continue the love by adopting a furry friend during June - National Adopt A Cat month.

Cat owners all across the land will be making plans on how to celebrate this auspicious occasion. Some will take their precious feline on an outing or buy a special kitty gift. People have even been seen dressing up for this day of tribute to their furry friends.

What will you be doing on May 30th and throughout June? Why not add some extra hugs for your cat to your schedule?

As far as I can tell, no one really knows.

Out of all my research I have not been able to establish an actual founder of this holiday, nor the true day on which it is to be celebrated.

What I have found is that there are several days when this special day is celebrated. Some chose to celebrate it in May, but most set aside June 4th for their National Hug A Cat Day. The latter would make more sense anyway since June is now National Adopt A Cat Month. However, I'm sticking with May 30th (since it is my birthday).

Whichever day you chose, make sure that you give it your full attention.

Some quick ideas on what to do for your kitty.

The first thing you will need to do is locate your ball of fur. They could be hiding anywhere.

As you can see, mine usually hide in the hardest places for me to reach, especially when it's time for a bath or medication. The front porch is where this kitty was hiding. He didn't think I'd find him, but he always goes to the same place! Funny Izzy kitty.

So just keep looking, kitty will show up.

1. Let kitty know that today you will be spending some extra time on them with their grooming. Mine love to be brushed, and brushed, and brushed ... Check out their coat for matted hair and trim it.
2. Open their mouth and look at their teeth. Cats around the age of 8 years old begin to have major tooth and gum problems. You may need to see a vet.
3. Give them a real rub down. It's a good way to check for fleas, ticks, cuts, bruises, bumps or eat mites.
4. Take them to the kitty spa for a bath and while you're there, have their nails trimmed.
5. Buy them a new scratching post or toy.
6. We like to be rewarded, and so does your cat. Give out some of their favorite snack treats or a new chew toy filled with a little catnip.
7. Declare that today you will change the cat litter on a regular basis and clean it daily. It's your way of flushing for your pet!
8. Take a ride to the pet park and socialize your cat with other humans and feline friends.
9. It would be a good day to volunteer at a pet shelter and consider adopting a cat (or two).
10. Schedule a check-up for your pet at the vets for vaccines or to be spayed or neutered. You can reward them later.
11. Have a catnip party with neighboring cats (ones they are friends with already). Don't overdo it though and send their cat home tipsy.
12. Be sure to wear your special Hug a Cat Day outfit. (You can get it here!)

Go ahead and give your kitty some extra hugs, spend a little more time on their grooming and give out a few special treats that they love.
