How Many Different Kinds of Parrots are There?

Updated on April 10, 2016

Talking Birds

Parrots are very intelligent animals. They can be as smart as three year old children. They are the only animals that can talk like people, so they are popular pets right after cats and dogs. There are a lot of funny jokes about parrots. Here are some of them.

This is my relative's blue and gold macaw when it was a baby. The other photos are PD.

These are great and colorful pictures and videos, thanks to the beauty of the birds. In spite of liking all the colors in a parrot, working in an office where one of the coworkers had an African Grey that she brought to the office every day taught me to like them a funny and so very very intelligent!

This article brought back crazy memories. When I was little, my dad had taken a sabbatical in Costa Rica as an archeologist/grave digger. He acquired a parrot, Lorita. It drove my mom crazy because it imitated my baby cry and had her hopping all the time. We brought Lorita back to Canada and in 1967 my parents left me and Lorita at my grandparents so they could attend the Expo Games in Montreal. My grandma complained about the parrot so he ended up in their garage. It was there he contracted pneumonia and died. My grandpa got the farmer down the road to stuff Lorita before my parents got home. I know have stuffed Lorita, Then my dad imported another parrot (Loretta). Loretta started getting a cold and my dad got so worried that he thought he was Dr. Doolittle and put Vicks all over the parrot's beak. The next morning, Loretta was dead as well. He got her stuffed too. Well, this was almost half a century ago but I will never forget. We also have a stuffed macaw somewhere in my dad's garage. Had to share! Made me smile:-)

I've got a Severe Macaw and a Cockatiel that have been my friends for years. While neither really "talk" much, the Macaw, Perky, is a fantastic mimic. He can make any sound effect he hears on the TV more than once or twice, barks with the dogs when strangers come to the house and meows to help the cat get his dinner. Smokey, the 'tiel, can whistle several complete tunes as well as mimic any bird call he's heard outside his window. Nice lens!

Parrots are really cool. I remember that when I was very young, a very, very old friend of my mother's (the lady was in her 80's) had a parrot who talked. His favorite thing to say was "Hide the beer - here comes the preacher"

    • profile image

      huvalbd 7 years ago

My grandfather gave a parrot to my grandmother's family as a courting gift. My great grandfather didn't care for the parrot much until the day a local preacher came by to try to convert everyone to his flock. After hours of tsermonizing, when the preacher was leaving, he said goodbye to everyone, including Polly--who said, as his very first words, "Go to hell." From that day forward my great grandfather made a special breakfast for Polly every morning.

The funniest episode I ever had with a parrot was when I was staying at the Sheraton in San Salvador, El Salvador. Out by the pool they had a lot of parrots in cages, and every night when I was trying to get to sleep, all I could hear was "Hola, Hola" from the parrot cages.

Awesome Lens. Parrots are the sort of bird that make you think twice about calling somebody a "birdbrain." Are you insulting the person or the bird? LOL.

I had no idea the world is full of these intelligent parrots, I loved the amazon parrot and the common parrot. They are lovable and brilliant , adopting a pet for bird is good for both the foster parent and the bird.

We had friends with a parrot that used to make the phone ring, and then answer it, and call out to our friend in his wife's voice that the phone was for him. I don't know how many times he went racing up to answer the phone and no one had called! Had a cockatiel that only ever did the wolf whistle in all different tones. Neat lens!
