365 Day Photo Challenge - September 2012

Updated on April 1, 2013

Daily Photo Project - September 2012

I'm starting to see why most people who succeed at their 365 Photo Projects pick a theme and stick to it. It can be really hard to come up with a picture a day if you don't have a definite plan, and you end up taking really lame pictures just so you can say you got your picture for the day. It hasn't become a big problem so far for me, but there are some days I struggle to come up with a shot I like. My theme was going to be "what I'm doing today." Most of the time it works out OK but I do lead a pretty boring life so sometimes the answer is "not much" which leads to some pretty boring pictures.

A Photo a Day for September 2012 - Deja vu...

I get to start my month in Bishop so hopefully I'll get some good pics to post here. As usual, most of my shots will probably be taken with my Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS or my Droid (I really need to get out more with my two Fuji cameras).

365 Photo Project - Day 22 - September 1, 2012 - My old Ford pickup...

Actually it's my dad's, but he hasn't driven it in at least 7 years and he told me it's mine whenever I want to pick it up. I love this truck - so many childhood memories. This is the truck we always took when we went fishing or hunting. It's been to several 4-H camps, countless Little League games, hauled pigs, helped us gather pine nuts, and I learned to drive in this truck. I hope it's always a part of my life,,,

Day 23 - September 2, 2012 - Lizard in the garden...

So it's a ceramic lizard - I still like it. This is in my parents' back yard in Bishop.

Day 24 - September 3, 2012 - Basin Mountain...

Basin Mountain

This shot should have come out much clearer, but I found out after the fact that the lens had a big smear on it. This affected all the pictures I took on the drive back to Reno. Very disappointing, especially since I don't get down to Bishop nearly often enough. Oh well...

Day 25 - September 4, 2012 - My Buick's engine - aluminum V8...

This is actually a very cool engine design - an all aluminum V8 that's only 215 cubic inches. This is from an era when most car makers were cranking out iron big blocks. I can't wait to rebuild this one, probably in the summer of 2014 (hmmm... a photo-essay in the making) after I finish the Slant Six in my Valiant wagon and the 292 Y-block in my dad's old truck.

Day 26 - September 5, 2012 - Ghost in the tree...

Day 27 - September 6, 2012 - Looking east towards my neighborhood...

Day 28 - September 7, 2012 - Long day at work...

Long day at work today. My boss wanted me to clean out the PBX room (I have to admit it needed to be done really badly) so that's how I spent most of the day. I think it came out pretty good...

Day 29 - September 8, 2012 -Sunset over Sparks...

Usually I like taking pictures of sunrises, but this sunset over Sparks doesn't look too bad. Taken with my ELPH 100 in Super Vivid mode.

Day 30 - September 9, 2012 - Fishing at Marilyn's Pond...

Fishing at Marilyn's Pond
Fishing at Marilyn's Pond

Today we took Robert fishing at Marilyn's Pond in Galena. He didn't catch anything but we had a great time anyway. It was his first time fishing (well, except for "Free Fishing Day" at Sparks Marina) and he had a brand new tackle box from Grandma and Grandpa. He insists I call him "Fisherman Robert" now:)

Day 31 - September 10, 2012 - Time to clean the man cave...

My man cave, in serious need of cleaning
My man cave, in serious need of cleaning

Actually, this is cleaner than it's been in awhile, but it still needs a lot of work. I've got lots of projects planned for my Man Cave this fall, the 2 most important being a 4x8 train layout and getting my Slant Six project off the floor and onto an engine stand...

Day 32 - September 11, 2012 - Christmas in September...

my Gibson Flying V
my Gibson Flying V

Wow, I can't believe it got here so fast:) I ordered my new Gibson Flying V late Saturday night (maybe it was early Sunday morning???) and when I came home today (Tuesday - just 2 days!!!) this big box was waiting on my porch. Maybe it's something my wife ordered - no way the guitar could get here this fast. OK, opened it, it's my Flying V...

Day 33 - September 12, 2012 - My new Gibson Flying V...

Sure enough, yesterday's package was my new Flying V guitar. This thing is really gorgeous... in fact too gorgeous. Maybe I should have gotten something not quite so nice to learn on. Anyway, I love it!!! Can't wait to learn how to play...

Day 34 - September 13, 2012 - Another reefer...

Jersey Gold HO Scale Reefer
Jersey Gold HO Scale Reefer

Haven't had any time (or money) to work on my model railroad lately, but I did pick up this really nice reefer on eBay a few weeks ago and finally got around to taking a picture. I really love collecting reefers and since S Helper seems to be out of S Scale, I'm left with collecting HO Scale. This one from Atlas is really nice. I especially like that it comes with horn hook couplers so I can run it with my Tyco trains.

Day 35 - September 14, 2012 - I guess summers over...

This one really bums me out. Last night on our bike ride, my wife's bicycle was making a moaning noise from the back tire. I couldn't pin it down, but just as we got home the 3 spokes on the back rim failed. She says she can just jog along when the kids and I ride, but it's really a lot more fun if we can all ride. I hope I can talk her in to getting a new bike...

Day 36 - September 15, 2012 - My wife's car in the garage...

My wife's car sitting in our garage. This one was kind of tricky to get. When I tried focusing on the car, the camera metered for the inside of the garage so everything outside was washed out to almost white. If I focused on the garage opening, it metered on the outside so everything inside was too dark to see. After trying a few different focusing (metering) points, I finally got a shot that showed bot the inside and outside pretty well. Taken with my ELPH 100.

Day 37 - September 16, 2012 - My son's first fish...

Robert's first fish

We took my son fishing for the third time ever today. On the last cast of the day he caught his first fish:) After he got it in some other kids playing in the area saw it and came running over with their mom to check it out and ask him a bunch of questions about how he caught it. He was so excited and proud:)

Day 38 - September 17, 2012 - A better shot of my Flying V...

Flying V Guitar, take 2...
Flying V Guitar, take 2...

The last shot of my Flying V didn't turn out so great (but I wanted to keep it for posterity) so I thought I'd try again. I think this one is a lot better but I still haven't mastered the art of taking pics of long, skinny subjects. This is something I need to work on - I've seen plenty of great looking guitar pics....

Day 39 - September 18, 2012 - Junk drawer in my tool box...

The bottom drawer in my tool box, aka the Junk Drawer. Lots of cool stuff in here, including a pack of automotive fuses, a vintage Mattel electronic football game, rod bolt protectors, a saw, and one of my favorite books from when I was a kid. I guess you could say I'm a pack rat. Maybe I'm just organizationally challenged. Probably both...

Day 40 - September 19, 2012 - Animal sanctuary???

Saw this while on a bike ride with my family. It almost looks like a ground squirrel's home. Maybe it's just a cool settling of the rock. Whatever, I thought it looked nice, especially in Super Vivid through my ELPH 100.

Day 41 - September 20, 2012 - Contrails at dusk...

Just some contrails over the foothills west of Sparks, just after the sun went down.

Day 42 - September 21, 2012 - Station wagon at dawn...

My Buick wagon at dawn
My Buick wagon at dawn

I really like this picture - the sun coming up behind my Buick wagon. I wish the car would have been a little darker but the sun was coming up too fast and by the time I figured out how to trick the camera into a faster shutter speed (my ELPH 100 doesn't offer manual shutter control) the sun was too high and no longer red. Maybe I'll have to post-process this one...

Day 43 - September 22, 2012 - Amber Ale...

I kind f decided that next month I'm going to take a picture of a different beer every day in honor of Oktoberfest, so I decided I'd better start playing around with the concept now to see what camera will give me good beer photos. This was taken with my ELPH 100, I'm not really too happy with it. Maybe my K200 will do better...

Day 44 - September 23, 2012 - Fishing at Paradise Park...

Fishing at Paradise Park

Took Robert fishing again today. It was really too windy and he didn't catch anything, but we had a great time anyway. He's getting a lot better at casting. Afterwards we went to a sushi bar for dinner. Really a wonderful day:)

365 Photo Project - Day 45 - My Fender Stratocaster...

My new (used) Fender Strat
My new (used) Fender Strat

Sometimes I get carried away... after I bought my Flying V, I started wishing I had something not quite as nice to practice on. I'm not saying the Strat isn't a nice guitar, I just wanted something not so "new." I found this one on craigslist for $300 - way cheaper than a new Strat. This one is made in Japan and has a Floyd Rose bridge (which I'm told isn't good for beginners) and a few scratches, so I don't have to worry about keeping it pristine. It sounds good and I love the wood grain on the body.

Day 46 - September 25, 2012 - Playing with electronics; 8051 single board computer...

8051 single board computer
8051 single board computer

One of my hobbies is electronics. I don't just like building and programming project though, I also think electronic circuitry looks fascinating. This is a close up shot of one of my single board computers. This one is powered by a Philips 8051 CPU.

Day 47 - September 26, 2012 - This really makes me mad...

I have phone racks at 4 campuses. I spend most of my time at the main campus and only get to the remote campuses 3 or 4 times a year. This is the server room/MDF at one of the remote campuses. I had this cleaned up really nice about 3 months ago and today this is what I walk in on. Empty boxes and trash everywhere, half-assembled server racks in the middle of the room, junk computer parts on the tables - it's enough to of the Good Humor Man...

Day 48 - September 27, 2012 - "Coaster, Dear"...

My wife brought these wooden table protectors from China. They're kind of worn (we've gotten years of service from them) but the texture is kind of interesting - and yes, it was kind of a slow day today for finding good picture subjects...

Day 49 - September 28, 2012 - TGIF...

My work tools - I'll be using them today and then I get the whole weekend away from them:) I like the way my ELPH 100 picked up the detail of the insulated leads on my tone generator. Not bad for a cheap little point and shoot camera...

Day 50 - September 29, 2012 - Pistachio wood...

One of my grandfather's hobbies late in life was making decorative boxes and wooded jewelry. His favorite wood to work with was pistachio, and when he passed away my mom got a big pile of pistachio wood. She came across it while cleaning out the garage and brought a piece to me to see if I wanted it. The grain is really beautiful...

Day 51 - September 30, 2012 - Close up keys...

Sometimes I like playing around with macro photography. The "macro" mode on my ELPH 100 isn't true macro (the image sensor is too small for that) but it does take some nicely focused close up shots. This one is also set to Super Vivid.

I did a 365 Project in 2010 and it was very successful, it got to the point where I didn't even have to think hard about what to take a photo of that day. Did you get all the way through the 365 days?
