How To Draw A Ninja - With Drawing Video Tutorials

Updated on October 5, 2011

Drawing A Ninja

Ninjas are a favourite of mine to draw, although honestly I haven't drawn them since I was a kid, mainly because I got into the horror scene of drawing demons and monsters, but also because I forgot all about drawing them, if that's possible!

To draw a ninja is to know how they look and this is easily remedied by looking at the various ninja films that I use to watch as a kid and be amazed at these ninjas who could sneak up on people and kill them without making a sound, although some film ninjas made a lot of noise there was a few rare occasions were the ninjas were as they were supposed to be efficient killing warriors.

You could look online too, as there are various ninja photos to use as reference for your ninja drawing, but typically we know that ninjas are often black and they wear hooded masks were their eyes only show, although there may be other colour ninjas out there, I wanted to focus on the black ninja and so what follows are three videos showing the progression of me drawing a ninja right before your very eyes.

Video 1 - Beginning sketches

The ninja drawing needs to be built up first and so I tried to be as sketchy as possible and try to work the overall form of the ninja as I was quite clear in my own mind how it would look as I was only intending the draw the ninja from the waist up holding a samurai sword.

Drawing A Ninja Video 2 - Drawing The Form

The whole ninja drawing seems to come more together on this stage as you start to define some of the pencil lines and make them more real, things like the ninjas outfit looks more defined and so we can concentrate on shading a few key areas of our ninja drawing.

Ninja Drawing Lesson Video 3 - Final Pencil Drawing

In this final video the ninja looks more finished with all the pencil shading done and most of the outlines done around the character and the all important samurai sword.

I could have inked the ninja pencil drawing, but maybe another time.
