Drawing Dragons Heads: Introduction

Dragons are the icon of fantasy, they are the creatures that are the top mascots for fantasy worlds, every fantasy world has to or does have dragons as the flying creatures that an imaginative world seems to need.

Dragons come in all colours and types, sizes and clans, in fact anything goes with dragons, your imagination is the only limit to creating the best dragon drawings that you can.

For this drawing tutorial we will be focusing on just the head, the main part of a dragon is it's head, get that wrong and then your dragon won't look like a dragon, the personality of a dragon shines from it's head and so learning how to draw a dragons head is what you'll learn right here!

The rough head I drew below is just a work in progress, a first step up from drawing at a basic level and the next stage from here would be to develop the drawing of your dragons head and make it more detailed like a dragons head should be.

The Dragon Head Needs Eyes And Features

For the dragons head to be a successful drawing, we need to think carefully about drawing in the main features like the eyes and the teeth and we need to think about sketching them in so that they look right and you can do this in two ways, you can sketch lightly to get an idea for the size of the eyes in relation to the heads size or you can draw a line down the middle of the head space so you can then draw the eyes that match with the other features of the dragons face.

Round Off The Dragons Features

At this stage I like to add the details as it is pretty much a finished drawing for me at this stage, if I have the main eye and mouth features correctly added I can then go onto adding the dragon scales and other details that could make the dragons head far better to look at.

As usual you could ink the drawing or not, it's entirely up to you at this end drawing stage, just remember that your dragons head is very important to capture the personality of the dragon and this must be taken into account when you draw the whole dragons body in another hubpage of our dragon drawing tutorial - Coming soon!.
