In pre-industrial Greece, the main building material was stone and one of the most major problems employing more residents of the mainland and the island less countryside was the safe passage of travelers and transport them over rivers, streams and torrents.

Until the 20th century, the only feasible but functional technical work that a non-qualified technician could construct that time using the necessary physical material was stone bridges, thas to provide the solution the transportation problem is employed not only themselves but to all its fellow was a stone bridge, arched like Konitsa or Artas.
