SheilaSchnauzies is a Miniature Schnauzer rescuer, writer, crochet designer, gardener, crafter, wife, mom & friend living in Omaha, NE.

All My Free Crochet Pattern Designs Have Arrived Here At HubPages!

For several years now I've been publishing my original crochet design patterns, most of them free to all crocheters, at Squidoo.com. When Squidoo announced it was being acquired by HubPages, it was time for me to drag out the virtual moving boxes and start packing up my nearly 400 articles to move here!

I'm very excited about the new opportunities at HubPages. It's going to be a new experience and I need to ask for your patience while I resolve any page content issues resulting from the transfer of my articles. For example, you might find a missing photo, or see that some other graphic element, video, or other illustration on the article might have transferred incorrectly. It's all a matter of formatting and editing and it will take a lot of time to get everything just right! And I do have to save some time for designing more Crochet projects!

One thing I would ask your help with – if you run across a crochet pattern that has messed up formatting in the actual pattern instructions section – please drop me an email at: SheilaSchnauzies@gmail.com so that I can get that fixed immediately! I don't believe we'll have those issues, but I'm asking you to watch for such problems just in case.

It's going to be a transition, and a big learning experience for me, yes... but we'll get through it together! Meanwhile, if you have trouble accessing any of my patterns, please email me at SheilaSchnauzies@gmail.com and I'll help you in any way I can.

Who In The World Is SheilaSchnauzies?

Lots of people wonder about my somewhat unusual pen name! It's really not much of a mystery! My name really is Sheila, of course. The Schnauzies? That comes from my Miniature Schnauzer Rescue which is called Sheila's Schnauzies. I've had this Schnauzer rescue in Omaha since about 1998 when I first became disabled. I wanted a way to "give back" to the universe, so to speak, for my wonderful former career. So I gave it a lot of thought, and then set out to volunteer with my first and foremost passion – dogs! Specifically, Miniature Schnauzers which I'd always owned and adored. I remember being shocked at the time to learn that there were actually purebred Miniature Schnauzers in rescue! Who would give up such a wonderful creature?

Well, lots and lots of people do, every single day. Our rescue has helped around 60 dogs become rescued, rehabilitated and placed in forever homes. Among the Schnauzers helped by our rescue, there has been the occasional pregnant Basset Hound and pups, a few terrier mixes, even a Schnauzer/Pit Bull mix!

Rescue costs a lot of money! There are transport costs to pick up and deliver dogs. There are huge vet bills all the time. When we have a bad case come in that requires a major surgery, those bills can become nearly insurmountable! We do special fundraisers for those. But for the everyday expenses - spaying, neutering, vaccinations and so forth, I've always relied on my creative abilities to meet those needs best I can.

I used to do "production crochet" - dishcloths, towels, and so on – for local craft shows to try and raise money. That was an unproductive outlet for me. Lots of people do not even want to pay the cost of materials used in the objects, let alone anything for labor. When I lost the ability to do production crocheting any longer due to arthritis in my hands, I realized I needed to go in a very different direction. It was at that point that I began to sell my crochet patterns online. Now, that was scary!

Still wanting to give back to the universe, which is my philosophy, I donated then and now about 95% of my patterns free to the world. Only a few are selected to appear on my for-sale pattern site at Craftsy.com. The rest you will find here for free, soon to be nestled conveniently in an index to all my free patterns.

I hope you'll enjoy my free patterns here at HubPages and perhaps be motivated to pick up a pattern or two at Craftsy! Thanks for your support. Happy crocheting!

The Story Of My Backward Rose...

At one of my former homes, I had an incredible lavender rose bush. I ran across a photo of some of its roses one day back in 2013. It made me realize that so many of the roses I've crocheted (including my own designs!) don't really look like real roses!

I tried to disregard the traditional way we usually crochet rose motifs. Then I reinvented it from scratch, working while referring to the picture of my pretty real rose. It took quite a few experiments before I felt I had it just right. Once I had taken photos of the new creation, I made a side-to-side comparison of mine with the real one. I think I just about captured it!

All of this is why this Backward Rose is the design I am most proud of. I've used the Backward Rose motif in several other creations including the Backward Rose Doily, Mini Doily, Corsage, even a potholder! This pattern works just as well in yarn as it does in thread. For example, you could take the Backward Rose Doily pattern, work it up in yarn, and use it as a pillow cover!

I hope you'll check out my Backward Rose pattern along with all of my other free crochet patterns!
